on nuclear waste
Nuclear waste (which is generated in miniscule volumes) has always been handled and stored safely, with no releases and no harm to the public.
The only reason you hear so much about trouble "solving" the nuclear waste problem is that it is the only waste stream for which proof of containment for as long as it remains hazardous is required. It's doubtful that other waste streams could meet the requirements placed on nuclear waste (or Yucca). Nuclear waste, in fact, is the only waste stream that has ever successfully met such an impeccible standard.
NRC was about to concur that Yucca would contain the waste for even a million years. No other waste stream comes close to providing that level of assurance or protection. Yucca was about to pass NRC review before Obama, Reid and NRC Chairman Jaczko halted the review (at the last hour) and supressed the findings, for purely political reasons.
Keep that in mind, as we watch this debate.
