Quote:
In a surprise to many Republican insiders, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney is at the top of the vice presidential prospect list for John McCain. But lack of personal chemistry could derail the pick.

One of the chief reasons the Massachusetts governor is looking so attractive is his ability to raise huge amounts of money quickly through his former business partners and from fellow members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, the Mormons.

Romney’s other advantages, according to people involved in McCain’s screening process:

— He is squeaky-clean and fully vetted by the national media.

But there’s one big problem: Despite the buddy-picture choreography of a McCain-Romney campaign swing, McCain remains less than enamored with Romney.

McCain sources also say he’ll pick his vice presidential candidate based more on ability to govern than ability to help in the election. Source

And so here we are... Fully vetted, squeaky clean, snubbed Romney.

What did McCain see during vetting that made him pass over Romney for Palin?

An old lost pic of Willard dressed in drag and parading up and down Castro Street in SF in the '60s? lol

I don't think he found anything "interesting," other than tons and tons of money.

Think about a McCain/Romney ticket: two old, boring, multimillionaire white guys, one the son of a multimillionaire white guy (echoes of W!). When McCain looked at Palin, he didn't see the brain-dead person we now know her to be, he saw a young, beautiful, dynamic politician with a bright future who would give his ticket some excitement. And that she did, until people started asking her questions that required complete sentences.

Probably Mitt's tax returns. One thing not open to the general public.

Exclamation hmm...

Romney: "I was an independent during the time of Reagan-Bush. I'm not trying to return to Reagan ..."

Perhaps McCain saw a man who as a member of a somewhat peculiar religious group and as a wealthy investor, would inevitably induce a horrendous cacaphony from the ******* moonbat hordes. McCain did not want to put the country thru such a spectacle. Thus he went with Sarah Palin, lol.

McCain wanted Joe Lieberman to be his VP, but as an Indpendent and former candidate with Kerry, Joe would never have been approved by the RNC or the party faithful. McCain tried to push Joe to them for too long before he gave up, and he needed a candidate quickly as a result. Even then, McCain was reluctant to give up on Joe.

Vetting Romney and all of the others was fast and slipshod, according to the book Game Change. The Democrats were still embroiled in the Obama-Clinton primaries when McCain's staff finally chose Palin. The same group vetted all the potential candidates. Steve Schmidt vetted Romney, Brownback, Crist and Powell as well as Romney and Palin. Imagine how Mitt felt, being passed over in favor of Sarah Palin.

No, McCain's camp knew a "Mormon" would upset the evangelical base.

McCain's VP pick, campaign, was one of those things where you just went
"What were they/he thinking" and then just say - Wow, I could have had a V8
