Mitt Romney’s campaign for president appears to have quietly abandoned its guiding assumption, that the election would center on the struggling economy, and has visibly begun to feel for a new message.
Romney and — particularly — his running mate Rep. Paul Ryan, have spent a week road-testing alternatives, going positive and going negative, swinging at the president on everything from faith to foreign policy. The new efforts mark a shift from a summer of fruitless discipline and a convention in which attempts to present a friendly, moderate tone trumped any policy substance. And campaign planners said their moves mark a new campaign consensus.
“No one in Boston thinks this can only be about the economy anymore,” one top aide said last week. “The economy narrows the gap and puts us in contention, but we have to bring more to the table.”
Ryan himself has emerged as a central player in this calculation, making the case internally for a clearer conservative policy message. One high level Republican with ties to the campaign told BuzzFeed that Ryan was chaffing at Boston constraining him from talking about and defending his policy ideas from Democratic attacks. Ryan wanted to be "unleashed," the Republican said.
The economy is enough - the only thing not working is his consistency in providing voters with a coherent message and narrative about why his vision for America is good. If he can keep his laser-like focus on the economy but deliver it in a way that people "get" like Reagan and Clinton did with their messages, he wins the election. I think a clear, concise conservative policy message will work.
What will not work is what he's doing now - swinging wildly in every direction. He may be hitting the president all over, but he's not landing any real blows.

There really isn't much of en enthusiasm gap anymore. Not to mention the enthusiasm gap tends to be a bigger issue in a midterm than a Presidential race due to the fact turnout is considerably lower.
Well, I think the economy is still a strong angle, but the "that guy stinks" approach is not good enough. Romney has not been able to convince anyone that he is any better. All indications are that he and his supply side ideas and sociopathic VP would just make things worse.

uh when you're one "strength" was the economy (when there are many facets to judge candidates by) and you're now LOSING that, then yes...your campaign is in desperation mode.

Yes, by all means, unleash Ryan. Let him put all of his Ayn Rand ideas out there. I can think of no faster way to completely tank the Romney campaign.
Good Grief, so they're just now figuring this out, when even conservatives from Rupert Murdoch to George Will and Ed Rollins have been saying for weeks, that they need a message with some alternatives, something else besides just "anybody but Obama"?!
It's one thing to pander to the "base" for votes, but it's quite another when you actually start believing they represent "reality"!
