Rachel Maddow show said that there have been televised debates only since 1976. Of those, the RM show backed up the research with NBC interviews shown the day after the first debate in 1976, 1980, 1984, 1992, 1996, 2004. Of these, only the incumbent Bill Clinton won the first debate in 1996. Of these, 3 of them eventually won the Presidency and 3 did not, hardly a death sentence.

How do you know that? Did you watch all of those other Presidential debates that featured incumbents? The oldest one that I can actually remember was in 1984. I actually remember it because they made fun of Reagan the next day trying to memorize and spill all of these factoids in the debate, which made him fumble his words. Nancy Reagan was furious at his handlers because they wouldn't let Ronnie be himself.

67 million people? Well you got that one right. With all of the immigration flooded into this country, there are a lot more ppl now than in those other years.

Even our dear, dear, dear, dear, dear, dear, dear ol' friend George W. Bush, the greatest president of all-time, stumbled badly during one of the presidential debates.

Luckily dear ol' Dubya came roaring back in a subsequent debate to save America from the very flawed economic policies and failed presidency of Bill Clinton.

We all love you, Dubya!!! Cough! Cough!

Dubya, all of the current Republican bozos love you too.

I get soooo tired of these Repubican bozos constantly talking about Dubya and his wonderful legacy this wuuuuuunderful president left us. Enough is enough. Please stop talking about George W. Bush.

I saw no mention of incumbents but I understand where the wording is likely a wee bit confusing.
