Do you know what killed the killed the Coal ndustry?
(1) Railroads quit using coal. Do you even know how much coad was burned by US railroads in their heyday of steam in the 1920s?
(2) How many people in the Midwest or East Coast still burn coal the heat their homes? I don't think you can even get a building permit to install a coal fired furnace or even find a coal fired stove or furnace at Home Dept, Walmart or Sears.
(3) America doesn't have more than a couple basic steel mills as that industry has vanished in places like Pittsburgh, Johnstown PA, Steelton-Highspire PA, Bethleham PA or Youngstown OH. We get steel these days from scrap steel and electric furnaces not the old Bessemer Process. Plus we don't use a lot anymore since things like cars are largely aluminum or plastics. We even make engine blocks out of aluminum. The steel being used the rebuild the WTC in NYC is coming from Belgium and France.
(4) US utlities haven't bought a new coal fired power plant in nearly 15 years
Coal is going to join stuff like peat, Whale oil, burning cow patties or buffallo chips, charcoal and human muscle power (aka slavery) as something we read about in history books or the Bible. The EPA has nothing to do with the march of progress buddy!
