CaseyB found this great article and posted it under immigration. However, I am borrowing it and posting it here as it pertains to the presidental election.
Minutes after taking the Pledge of Allegiance, new American citizens are urged to register as voters by Democratic activists who see them as natural party supporters who could hold the key to the 2008 election.
But with increasing illegal immigration threatening the economy and security of the United States, many legal immigrants anxious to uphold the laws of their adopted country are moving towards the more hard-line immigration stance of Republicans.

Provided the story is accurate, I wonder if they are doing it because of the "upholding the laws" or because of Bush's plan of amnesty for family and friends...

A LOT of Hispanics are sick and tired of being thought of "illegals" and being "blamed" because of throngs of illegals killing, raping, robing, and stealing form America. Check out LAIR ( LAIR » Page 1 of 1 )! People are sick and tired of illegals killing, pillaging, and destroying this country. The legal Hispanics know they are getting a bad rep because of illegals!
DEPORT ILLEGALS NOW!! Go Huckabee! Go Romney!! Down with Rudy! Down with Juan McCain!!

really? Since when have the Repubs been hard on immigration? when all the brown folk started showing up in Red states and their constituents started complaining to their GOP Congressman? That's quite a hilarious statement!

Look at Republican candidates platforms on illegals vs Democratics. The current crop of Republican candidates are far tougher on illegals than Bush or Clinton ever were. You can see from their agenda THEY are hearing the people. Fred Thompson has had an agenda on his website from day one that doesn't tolerate illegals nor offer amnesty. Tancredo and Hunter speak out against illegals all the time. Hunter completed a fence on his section of the California /Mexico border.
The Democratics say they will close the border, give amnesty and drivers licenses to just about anyone and everyone. Futhermore, just about all states currently have some sort of legistation in the works relating to this illegal problem. I'd say 95% of it has come from Republican senators. Unfortunately we have to ride politicians, Repubs & Dems a like, very hard to keep this going but I see the Repubs being far more receptive to our plight, apparently new immigrants do too.
Well, if you spent so much time and money to get into this country the legal way, why would you support somebody breaking the law and being rewarded? That's how I see it anyways.
Actually the majority of legal Hispanics are turning back to the Democratic Party, because of their displeasure with the Iraq War, the way Republican candidates are ignoring them, and the not too subtle racism that often goes along with the immigration rants by Republicans.
A new USA TODAY/Gallup Poll indicates that Hispanics, by nearly 3 to 1, say they're Democrats or lean that way. Of those, 59% support the New York senator over her presidential rivals — her strongest showing among any major demographic group and a huge potential asset for early contests in Nevada, Florida, California and other states with large Hispanic populations.
One big factor behind the flight from the GOP: a heated debate over immigration in which congressional Republicans' remarks on illegal immigrants have offended many Hispanic voters. The fallout from that battle, shifting Latino loyalties and a changing political calendar have scrambled political calculations made about Hispanics after the last presidential election — and raised the stakes for their role in choosing the Democratic nominee for the next one.
In a sign of how GOP priorities have changed since President Bush's careful cultivation of Hispanic voters, all the Republican candidates declined invitations to join a similar forum there Friday, citing scheduling conflicts.
"On the one hand, they say that they're not willing to concede the Hispanic vote," says Arturo Vargas, executive director of NALEO, whose convention opens today. "On the other hand, it's actions that speak louder than words."
Only 11% of Hispanics now identify themselves as Republicans, down from 19% in 2005, while the proportion who call themselves Democrats has jumped to 42% from 33%.
Including independents who "lean" to one party or the other, Democrats lead Republicans among Hispanics 58% to 20%.
