That said, I would never not be married without a certificate. I'm too much of a pack rat, and some of my stuff is worth a lot of money. I would want the person who means the most in my life to me to get my junk when I'm gone and let her do with it as she will.

But that's just me. I am not about to be forcing anyone to conform to my beliefs just because they are my beliefs. If a couple sees no need for any formal recognition of their marriage, who am I to impose by beliefs on them? Whatever problems that may arise are their concern, not mine. Or yours.

Medical power of attorney and a last will and testament, do everything a marriage document does.

Not all of those states votes Republican in presidential elections, and most of those states have small electoral votes.

Just because a state has a Republican governor don't mean they would vote for a conservative candidate. A moderate, perhaps but they still might be blue in the election. Quite a few of them sway democrat in the presidential elections though. Wisconsin is one, New Mexico is another, New Jersey is a third ran by a moderate I believe both Florida and Ohio are too.

In closing, a moderate may keep a red gubernatorial state red in a presidential election but I don't see a conservative in particular most of the current crop doing so.

Not for hospital visitation rights. A gay couple can't adopt as easily without having the paper a straight couple can get. A gay couple can't file taxes jointly unless their state acknowledges common law marriage for homosexuals. You keep putting up smokescreen defenses that are easy to poke holes into. I drove a truck though the one about a last will and testament.

Medical power of attorney gives all the power of a married couple, next of kin relationship. Including visitation. I just went through this with my familyless elderly neighbor and good friend. I have medical power of attorney and I am the executor of her will when she dies.
What relationship do you have with the patient... I have medical power of attorney. I didn't even have to show my documents I had with me.
The person in control of my life or death, better be able to see me to make an informed decision.

Single people are allowed to adopt in Texas(it is all about income and living arrangements). You don't even need to be married.

Presidential election years and midterm election years are something totally different.

The problem is not the tea party itself but the "teavangelicals" who have hijacked the tea party and infused it with a theocratic agenda. These people are proponents of small government in the board room but want the biggest government possible in the bedroom. Republicans will never win another national election until they stop fighting the culture wars.
