I don't know much about Chicago, but I would certainly never think that a Repub would have a shot at the mayoralty. Chicago is as Dem as it gets. Pres. Obama rushed to Chicago just recently to get out the black vote, which was considered to be the key to winning. He'll most likely win again, but I like it that he has to work for it.
This is a primary run off between two Democrats. Emanuel's opposition has the backing of the Chicago Teacher's Union.

I expect that Rahm will in the end get his second term. He will probably even avoid a jail term unlike so many other Chicago politicos, The FBI will back off this time.
And of course there is Blago and a slew of other Illinois governors, secretaries of state, etc.
The " Chicago- style politics is a referral to the Daley machine.
Illinois had the unique distinction of having 2 former governors in prison at the same time. Blago and Ryan, a Republican who was defended by another former governor.
The black vote coming out in big numbers is probably Rahm's worst nightmare, since he lost a lot of support among black voters over his handling of public schools. Had Karen Lewis been able to run there was a good chance Rahm would have been straight up beaten, namely by black turnout.
Indeed.
The Chicago Teacher's Union did not take kindly to Emanuel's closure of majorly underperforming schools with substantially declining student populations and his advocacy for Charter schools and more highly selective Magnet schools, the latter of which does as well as or better than the top suburban schools.

Neither did the black community considering that the schools he closed were 90% black. If anything this is also a proxy fight between 3rd way "Democrats" and populist Democrats.
Good for them for being able to break through the corruption and let the country know they want something better than a city owned by Obama-worshipping Democratic establishment overlords reducing its population to a state of minionship and subjugation. Rahm Emanuel as Mayor has failed Chicago in every sense of the word, and the city could do worse than to start anew, no matter who provides that fresh start.
Ah, but it sometimes takes someone further to the left to deliver better government, someone who may be further to the left but unlike the less-left predecessor actually cares about the city, has a vision for making it a better place for its people that transcends his/her own pockets, and has the will and guts to make it happen.
Again this is a primary run off between two Democrats.
The President of the Chicago's Teacher's Union intended to run against Emanuel but got a brain tumor.
Emanuel's opponent is a tool of the Chicago Teacher's Union, the long time backbone of Chicago style politics.
It's the force that kept the Daily father and son in office for decades.
Imagine the dynamics of a Chicago Democrat who opposes the Teacher's Union.
One would think with the number of gang murders eventually the public out cry would be like the twenties they would do more about it. Perhaps there will be a event that makes stopping it the issue of the day yet. But its not going to be one at a time murders apparently. There New Orleans and some other cities seeing death rates higher than the mob days one would think the justice department would eventually go after them except for the politics of ignoring .On e would have thought a black president would have made it a priority .
