Actually, Rahm did OK in the majority black wards despite all this. Maybe they just don't want to vote for a Hispanic candidate - but they had a couple other options in the initial election and still voted for Rahm, though not as strongly as his first go-round. Toni Preckwinckle would probably have beaten Rahm and she's gotta be kicking herself now for not running. Karen Lewis? I doubt she'd get that much more support than Chuy. She's a firebrand prone to some really stupid ****.

Actually, they were more upset with Rahm extending the school day by 2 hours with no pay bump, then demanding more performance evaluations, on top of being an advocate for charter schools. The school closings took place after the strike.

Rahm has actually done a decent job of turning the city's finances around given the absolute timebomb Daley left for him. Daley had been borrowing for years and selling off city assets for one-time budget fixes. Plus taking pension holidays, kicking the can down the road for his successor to deal with. In 2015 a balloon pension payment of $550 million is due to the underfunded police & fire pension. Add to this Rauner's proposed cuts to the city funds and the situation is not pretty.

However, since Rahm's first mayoral campaign he's been seen as an outsider more interested in fostering his image nationally than sticking around Chicago. That criticism has stuck with him throughout his tenure as mayor. Filming that stupid show for CNN didn't help. His management style has also made many enemies. He's an aloof, arrogant *******, and most Chicagoans don't like him at all. But many of us also realize that given the city's dire financial situation and accelerating but fragile economic growth, he's a lot better than the alternatives. We'll see what happens on April 7th - personally I think Chuy's populism will be a disaster at worst and at best leave his union backers sorely disappointed and disillusioned when he can't afford to hook them up.

Supporting Obama and his policies is toxic to one's political future. This should have been an EASY WIN for Rahm.

Unless you live in chicago, why should this concern you?

Oh, yeah, Obama...never mind.

I'm thinking most of his voters all shot and killed each other since his last election.

This thread is a great example of partisan hypocrisy.

We have the rwnj's trying to pin this as an indictment of Obama when really it's Rahm taking on the entrenched public unions. He's doing what you scream for and you lol....blame Obama. Really, that's hillarious.

We have the lwnj's that scream and cry when Scott Walker does the same things.....and here they are quiet as a mouse. lol.

I guess if Rahm wins the runoff you'll be touting the political clout of supporting Obama and his policies, eh?

That isn't the point at all. The OP, bty isn't a right winger...The point still remains, being attached to Obama isn't ever a good thing and could be a bad one. This is one thing that might haunt Hillary, among other things.

Yet Rahm somehow still managed to be elected.

That didn't seem to effect Obama in 2012 and 2008.
