Exactly. The two are intertwined. He's a snake oil salesman....the guy who sells Ginzu knives to insomniacs. Trump IS the snake oil...the Ginzu knives. He sells himself and he excels at getting people to fall for it.
Ginzu knives are pretty cool.....being sold on non existing WMD in Iraq and getting thousands killed over that, not so much.
While he's winning the RNC battle, he appears to turning a lot of voters off (high unfavorables), and Independents and Democratic will surely turn their backs on him.......thus losing the war.
