What most people miss is that his answer is intended to purposely generate attention, argument, and debate all of which Trump benefits from and he is a master of this type of self promotion. See because while we're all talking about Trump and his gall not to know about the KKK all the attention is again on Trump with free press and attention while his opponents are left again in the shadows having to pay for such air time and attention.

He said he couldn't denounce groups that he knows nothing about. He said if he researches them, and they are involved in wrongdoing, he would denounce them.
Except Trump is lying, as he did once condemn Duke but is now pretending not to know him:

These are stupid "gotcha" questions and should be dismissed out of hand.
What I would have said is "Jake, it's a stupid question and if you can't do better than this your network needs to ask for a refund of some of your salary".
