Economists On Candidates' Proposals: Mostly Bad : Planet Money : NPR

Tuition free public colleges, flat taxes, $15 federal minimum wage, and expelling immigrants were all considered poor ideas.

Interesting article... and seems unbiased since everyone gets hit.

I'm surprised they didn't mention the healthcare proposals on either side though.

This is who they posted their questions to. I don't know enough about economists to say if it's legit or not.

Good summary, thanks.

My only complaint is that they focused on only three candidates... Sanders, Clinton and Trump. With the exception of one from Cruz, no analysis of the others. Or of healthcare, yes.

Marco Rubio's proposal to drop the corporate tax rate to 25% was considered good, or debatable.

Economists are like public notaries.
You can find one to put a stamp on anything.

$15 minimum wage will be phased in until 2021. These people seem to think it will happen overnight.

Furthermore, they are in favor of MEANS testing! Means testing means putting the middle class up against the poor, and always causes division. Its a bad idea to let the middle class pay and the poor gets the benefits, so that the middle class can rail against "evil government and high taxes". If you want a proper and sustainable system, EVERYONE pays and EVERYONE gets the benefits.

I'll be honest with you PCAL, I'm ambivalent towards raising the minimum wage. I don't consider myself exactly a "free market" proponent, but I think if the state of labor unions could be improved, we wouldn't need to raise the minimum wage. Germany is an example of a country with no minimum wage but very strong union culture, they negotiate their own minimums according to their industries. Right now the country is anti-union, and anti-minimum wage. Can't have both, something has to give.
