CNBC reports tonight that Trump thus far has lost 80% of the registered republicans (That number sounds high so maybe someone knows if it is accurate and has verification) and his delegate lead is covering up that fact. He's living on democrats turned and independents and some new voters.
When the closed primaries start he may sink.

I think what was meant was 80% of the states that have a closed Primary. Now that isn't really correct since Texas is an open Primay, although unlike other open Primary states if you vote for one party in a Presidential Primary you can't vote for the other party in a Primary in the down ballot races.
With that being said, putting Texas aside, I see what they were trying to state. There were 4 other states with a completely closed Primary or Caucus (Iowa, Nevada, Oklahoma, and Alaska). Trump only won Nevada. All the other states that Trump won were either semi-open or completely open.
With that being said, that doesn't mean Indepdents or Democrats are what is putting Trump over the top. In a bunch of these states, there is no actual registration by Party. Chances are the vast majority voting in the Republican Primary in those states are Republicans, regardless if they are technically a registered Republican or simply consider themselves a Republican, but in a state with no Registration by Party.
