Conservatives are not WORKING WITH establishment republicans. Both Conservatives and establishment republicans are working against a TRUMP WH but their reasons are diametrically opposed.

The Republican Establishment doesn't care if their 3rd party candidate fails - the goal is to take votes away and make Trump fail.

Rick Perry. Mitt Romney. Someone like that.

On one hand, such a move will foreclose whatever little chance the GOP had of winning the Presidency. But it won't be intended to result in a Presidential win. Rather, it will be intended to limit the long-term damage Trump will do to the party. For example, it will likely mitigate losses in the House and Senate by providing a candidate for millions of Republicans who will never vote Trump and would thus otherwise stay hope - instead, they'll come out to vote, and while they're there they'll vote for down-ballot Republicans. Also, post-November, the GOP establishment can blame Trump on the 'rabble' and point to the fact that they help take him down with a right-splitting alternate candidacy.

Desperate move? To be sure. But they're Dr. Frankenstein, and slaying the monster they've created is going to cause a lot of collateral damage.

Top conservatives gather to plot third-party run against Trump - POLITICO
Interesting theory.

I wonder if they would still do this if Sanders beats out Clinton for the nomination, and if so would that be Sanders' path to the White House?

The only reason why the establishment might not like Trump is because he has very little chances Of winning against Hillary.

TPTB love Trump. Lower taxes for the rich and No Obamacare. Let those people rot in the streets. If you have preexisting conditions too bad, die already.

A third candidate will guarantee republicans will lose the election. So no, they won't do it. They will unite and support Trump. Kasich and Romney are just plan B for 2020 if Trump loses the election.

Apparently that is what the goal is at this point. They don't want Cruz. They despise Trump, so they are putting Party before Country. The motto of the establishment GOP.

You are missing something VERY important. If Trump gets in the WH, then all the GOP congressional and Senate seats go into play. Generally speaking, voters do not like to have both the legislative and executive branches held by the same party. As soon as the mid-term election cycle hits, all those cozy establishment types will have to worry about their seats if there is a Trump in the (White) house!!

If Hillary wins, at least the big donors on both sides of the aisle still have control. That is more important to the GOP than winning the race.

Good point. To many/most large corporations and funds, stability and predictability are truly the most important thing. . . . chaos and new order are very, very bad for their business. At least Hillary would provide status quo and stability to them and that might be why they are comfortable with the approach.

And they can keep outsourcing, moving factories to other countries, and bring cheap labor into the US from Mexico.

Exactly.
The GOP is beginning to recognize what they have done to themselves...the wound is self-inflicted. Reince Priebus presided over a corpse with goals. The closed door discussions are most likely not about the presidency at this stage. The convention platform fight will be a big ruckus as factions struggle for control of the party's carcass. There will be defections either way and a lot of unhappy people. If Trump is blocked at the convention by manipulation or party chicanery I can see his supporters wanting to bolt with a third party. I would not be surprised to see a third party try to defeat Trump (if he wins the nomination) and then go on to rebuild a "conservative" party (by their definition) over the next four years. Hillary would be easier to work with than Cruz and more predictable than Trump.

The Dems will have their own issues if Bernie gets totally ignored at their convention.
