and you are part of the republican party upper management. You need to decide...do you torpedo trump and try to sustain the 2 party power sharing structure that has been in place for 100 years....or.....do you reverse course and support him, knowing that you have a tiger by the tail which may turn and eat you and damage the republican party for a generation or more, maybe permanently?
What to do, what to do......?

Nah, that's not the point. These guys all play the long game. Trump threatens their power structure, both sides. So if they have to throw the game, they can immediately reload (maybe) and begin the 2020 plan. If they go with trump, they threaten to upset the structure of elections and government that has kept them in power for years and years.

I know . . . . stop f-ing smoking. . . that chit will kill ya. I thought Boehner retired. . . . Does anybody else smoke any more in 2016?

Back to the topic, the establishment appears to be prepared to push the self-destruct button. I would have never guessed it in million years, and I have gained new respect for the Republicans for self-immolating themselves to do the "right thing" (whether they are misguided about that is a whole another question, of course).

Honestly, I don't really know why the GOP wouldn't just capitulate to Mr. Trump and have a marriage of convenience for four years (he wouldn't run for a second term). If they engage in funny business, there will be some crazy riots.

Mick

You half-heartedly support him.

Most Americans are smart enough to realize that Trump represents mainly himself, not the GOP. Shunning him and ignoring the will of the voters would cause infinitely more harm to your brand.

Let Trump get smashed in the GE, give him lukewarm support (as many Republican voters will), then regroup for 2020. That's the only way. If Democrats can survive McGovern and Mondale, the GOP will survive Trump.

Torpedo him, but try to do it more stealthily than they have managed so far. Better to lose one election than damage your party for, as you say, a generation. They can give weak support, send out stooges to do Ben Carson-like backhanded endorsements, start attacking the credibility of supporters like Christie (encourage that gubernatorial impeachment, baby), tighten the purse strings of party financial support, have George W. and Dick Cheney endorse him, somehow get "caught" saying things about him that will send his supporters in a tizzy but "try" to explain them away like it accidentally got out, and then "accidentally" say things on news programs that put Hillary in a positive light. Meanwhile, in the dark shadows, have "some rebels" send out a 3rd party candidate despite your (cough*cough) trying to talk them out of it.

That's what I would do.

The Republican establishment has itself to blame for Donald Trump. Nature abhors a vacuum. Trump is filling it.

Squash Trump, let's see if you can do it. They've waited too long.
