2016 is nowhere near as tense as 1968. I was 24 years old then, and I well remember how terrible that summer was.
It's important to remember that the Army back then was made up of drafted conscripts. While the Army grunts were fed up by 1968 and some turned to fragging their low grade field officers, they never revolted nor failed to follow orders from the top. There was never even any mention of a mutiny.
Today's soldiers are a completely different breed of cat. They were driven so hard during the Iraq war they were thought to be close to breaking, but they never did, and as a large unit, were a much harder bunch than the kids who went to Nam, where it was every man for himself.
It's far, far more likely that Trump will not be elected than believing there's a possibility of a coup if he pulls it off somehow.
The United States is nowhere as stressed as most of Europe is, or China, or Russia, or just about every other world power. Talk of a coup is nothing but adolescent nonsense, an entertaining thought after watching one too many zombie movies.
Americans Hold Fast when things get tough. We have Held Fast to our government and our constitution through times far more trying than these before, and we will Hold Fast in times to come. That's one of the things we have always been the best at doing.
