From policies to character, if there were a perfect presidential candidate for you, what would he/she look like?

Hmm, no response yet. Guess it's easier to bash candidates we DON'T like.

Only 19 minutes passed during the supper hour.

Someone talking about the real issues: economy, jobs, security and healthcare.

Policy: Americans first. Supporting the laws of our country. Becoming energy independent to avoid nonsense wars to put money in contractors pockets while our young men and women die. Believes ALL life matters including that of the pre-born. (Trump does pretty well, thus my support)

Character: Honest and trustworthy. (Carson was my favorite in this category with Hillary being the worst. Trust gets an "average" grade on this.)

As far as policy, I tend to just want them to be in the center. Since they are not lawmakers (I can only assume you mean presidential candidate), I don't know if it's worthwhile for them to have a terribly extreme view. Since, theoretically, a president is meant to represent the whole of a population, he would likely be in the center. I'm much more willing to vote for a far left/far right person if it's congress.

I won't go into the specifics of what that means for the time being.

As for their character, I would like them to be honest. Bernie Sanders is a pretty good example of character. While his economics were... ambitious, I think he's the type of human who deserves to be president. He's honest and clear on where he stands, and his voting record shows a great deal of consistency. He doesn't flip flop to appeal to what's popular (to be clear; changing a position is not bad but changing it only when the political climate makes it beneficial, like Hillary does, is not nearly as respectable). He's also kind and civil, unlike Donald Trump. That one speaks for itself.

Basically, a decent human who is honest at least most of the time (as in 75% or more) who's policy is closer to the center and is willing to make compromises when necessary. So, neither Hillary nor Trump.

I would like a Presidential candidate who focuses the majority of their time (80% or more) focusing on domestic issues. I personally feel that America has a lot of domestic issues that have been blatantly ignored by Obama who has chosen to be more interested in foreign policy and I am a strong proponent of isolationist and "it's not my business" view points when it comes to foreign policy. I would like a President who shares that as well.

My ideal candidate would also be supportive of social stances, such as pro-choice, pro-weed, pro-LGBTQA+ and many more. I am a libertarian in this manner and I would like my ideal Presidential candidate to also realize that if it is not hurting other living beings, then it shouldn't be any of the government's concern. I believe restricting social issues gives way to the bonding of a church and state rather than a separation of, as many people's morals are influenced by religion and should not be imposed of those with different morals and those who would like to live without religious influence in their lives. I would like to see a similar secular quality in my ideal candidate, whether they are religious or not, recognizes this. Again, as long as it does not harm a living being.

My ideal candidate would also be in favor of things like single-payer healthcare and stronger environmental regulations, but would want to have this operated on local levels meaning in favor of DECENTRALIZATION (except environmental regulations should be more federal as many times they can get into interstate issues, for an example see the Colorado River in the Southwest and air quality). I would expect this Presidential candidate to be a proponent on states and encouraging them to pursue these liberal and socialist programs on state, county, and city levels. I do believe that at this time these programs are better off being instituted on a smaller-scale where they can address that specific population's needs (states) and then when others see how good they are, similar policies can happen on a federal level so that every American would have access to healthcare. Weed legalization is going through this process currently. States, counties, and cities should have more control on what goes on, I think this will create a happier populace of Americans with more choices on where to live on what best suits them on a political level as people choose politics based on what will work best for their lifestyle. This would go for more than just healthcare, by the way. I believe in strong local governments, and a weak federal one.

My ideal candidate would also cut the military budget significantly (as part of the reduction of importance on foreign issues) and divert that money to education and infrastructure. As part of this, we would pull out of the Middle East.

The ideal candidate would also be against trade deals like NAFTA and the TPP (again, see my rather extreme isolationist viewpoint) and other policies that send jobs overseas and hurt the American economy/resources (H1B program, open borders, etc.). I'd also pass a rather strong immigration policy saying that newborns should have at least one American citizen parent in order to gain automatic citizenship, this is a policy that is implemented in most of Europe, not just automatic citizenship being born on the soil.

The candidate would also have a pro-2nd amendment stance. The only gun control I could support is requiring citizens who want to buy a firearm to pass a gun safety class (only once in a lifetime requirement, I do believe gun safety is common sense but many lack that apparently), and things like databases on information about gun owners would be considered unconstitutional and there would be no restrictions on gun ammunition.

This candidate would also like to bring back Glass-Steagall and publicize the Federal Reserve, would also bring back the Gold Standard, and abolish the IRS.

As far as the candidate themselves, outside of policy, I would like them to have experience in the federal government before the campaign, extensive experience working on bipartisan issues with those of other ideologies and PASSING bills.

I wonder if anyone is going to try to attack me on any of these. I personally think I am mixed on political stances and I don't fit to any one party, which sucks as then I have to pick and choose which ones are more important. I will never in my lifetime see a candidate on any level support my ideas 100%.

My ideal candidate would be a blend of Adlai Stevenson and Nelson Rockefeller. As others have posted, I also prefer a centrist. The ideal candidate firmly believes in free-markets, but is also aware that markets can't solve every problem, or deliver the optimal solution in every case. I prefer a candidate who realizes that national identity and community cohesion are NOT inapposite with immigration.

Unlike seemingly everyone else on this Forum, I am strongly in favor of international partnerships, such as the UN. I see America's role as peaceful and deferential, but fully embracing international leadership in commerce, human rights and the general advancement of mankind. I see globalization, automation and trade as opportunities - not threats.

On many domestic and social issues, I lean Libertarian. But I prefer a strong national government over state and local parochialism, and would be in favor of repealing the 10th amendment. I also think that Libertarians tend to underestimate the threat of private concentrations of power, be it churches or PACs, unions or corporations or HOAs.

Character: Honest. Highly intelligent. Not a racist or a bigot or a bully. Not extremely religious. Not narcissistic and egotistical. Open minded.

Issues: Main focus would be in maintaining a strong economy, with good-paying jobs for all those who can work. In favor of job training for the poor, but against welfare in any form except for seniors and/or those who truly cannot work. Pro environment. Believes in enforcing laws for everyone, with no special privileges given to anyone. Puts the wants and needs of U.S. citizens before anyone else. Mostly isolationist and would rather help other countries by providing food and medicine instead of bullets and bombs. Moderate on almost every other issue.

Background: Is a current or former governor of a U.S. state. Has a working or middle class background. All of his or her grandparents were born in the U.S., but no preference as to race or ancestry. Married for at least 20 years to someone who was born in the U.S.. Has at least one child and/or grandchild under the age of 25.

(I obviously support neither HRC nor Trump.)

Simple.....exactly the opposite of what hil clinton is.

Though not opposite being female...not an issue for me at all....male/female, who cares really either way? Character/job ability, not what sex one is, race, religion, etc. is what's important. Though I will say if hil is the best female they can find to potentially be the first female president?.....yikes!
