I've seen many threads throughout this election season regarding poll numbers. Why do so many people find these statistics so important when we're still 3 months away from the election, and Trump and Clinton have yet to even have their first debate?

I'm a numbers guy, a CPA. Yet along time ago I just ignore polls leading up to the election. I'm honestly not sure of the purpose of these polls. Are they used to swing votes, maybe getting into the head of an undecided that "their" candidate is behind and needs your vote? It's like a 20 year old looking at his/her retirement portfolio everyday and worrying if it's value is up or down even though it will be 50 years until they touch it.

There's only one poll that counts, the one that will be done on Nov. 8th.

I agree with you. But there are people who lean on and "use" those manufactured numbers to create perception and attempt to get others on the bandwagon, no matter how slanted those figures are

I think it's mostly due to a horse race mentality. Plenty of people think the shifting numbers are fascinating in their own right, without getting religious about them. Others, of course, do get religious.

Polling is vitally important to candidates and campaign managers. But at the presidential level, they rely more on their private polling which the general public never sees.

I think that it is just something simple as a condensed fact for people to use to start a political discussion.
