Compelling Mexico to Pay for the Wall

Introduction: The provision of the Patriot Act, Section 326 - the "know your customer" provision, compelling financial institutions to demand identity documents before opening accounts or conducting financial transactions is a fundamental element of the outline below. That section authorized the executive branch to issue detailed regulations on the subject, found at 31 CFR 130.120-121. It's an easy decision for Mexico: make a one-time payment of $5-10 billion to ensure that $24 billion continues to flow into their country year after year. There are several ways to compel Mexico to pay for the wall including the following:

  • On day 1 promulgate a "proposed rule" (regulation) amending 31 CFR 130.121 ...
  • On day 2 Mexico will immediately protest. They receive approximately $24 billion a year i...
  • On day 3 tell Mexico that if the Mexican government will contribute the funds needed...
  • Trade tariffs, or enforcement of existing trade rules:...
  • Cancelling visas: Immigration is a privilege, not a right....
  • Visa fees: Even a small increase in visa fees would pay for the wall...

...We have the moral high ground here, and all the leverage.

It is time we use it in order to Make America Great Again.

.
And Mexico will create their own rules to counter any rules Trump imposes.

We, America, hold all of the cards. Our game, our rules, Mexico will pay for the wall and like it, which they will when they see how it benefits them, also...

Exactly, if the US tries to raise tariffs on Mexican goods, Mexico will just raise tariffs on US goods. It is also highly likely that other countries around the world would also take punitive action against the US in solidarity with Mexico. Trump's wall is never going to happen and even he knows it. Only the clueless racists that support his campaign believe this nonsense.

I'm happy that you seem so content living in your dream world. Mexico will pay for the wall, they have no choice and no leg to stand on. Raise the tariff on the goods they supply? I think you are serious...
very sad..

We must recall that most of the border area in Texas is privately owned land (as opposed to the land in New Mexico and Arizona). Most Texas ranchers are against having their land taken to build a 'wall', which of necessity (and by treaty) must be set rather far back from the Rio Grande river (out of the flood plain).

This is just one of many articles speaking of the difficulties faced in building a fence, much less a 'wall', along the Texas-Mexico border.

Raise the tariff on goods coming in from Mexico? OK, that will immediately increase the price of those goods. So the American consumer will pay more. Either way, if the US wants a wall we have to pay for it ourselves.

Or seize U.S. businesses operating there and deport the Americans running them.

Also, what the "plan" leaves out are the lawsuits challenging the proposed regulations and the years it will take to resolve them. And the lawsuits for eminent domain against private landowners and the border state governments and the many years it will take to resolve them. And the lawsuits from landowners whose livestock and farmlands depend on the river for irrigation. And the obstruction from the employers of the 11 million people who are here illegally.

If immigration were as easy to address as Trump and his supporters think it is, it would have been fixed years ago.

The Patriot Act, being an act of Congress, require congressional action to amend it. If you think that's going to happen on Day 1 you are dreaming...

Amazing to me how the left has no concept who holds all the cards here and how much Mexico depends on the US. It's not even close how much more they need us but somehow all of this gets lost. My guess is you are definitely the type of people that get screwed anytime you make major purchases, no concept of negotiating power.

We are the senior partner in the relationship here, not them.

You have to excuse the Democrats (and some Republicans). The only way they know how to pay for things is taxes. Alternative ideas are foreign to them.

Maybe if Trump said, "The tax rate for illegal aliens is triple the rate of citizens," they would be more receptive.
