In 1973 Nixon seemed to have destroyed the Republican Party, and in 1980 Reagan rode to a landslide win over Carter.

Many senior Republicans turned on Nixon for good reason then, just as many senior Republicans are doing the same to Trump today. With numerous Republicans refusing to support him despite it meaning they could lose the presidency. Conversely, no major Democrat has abandoned Hillary, despite her proven record of lies, corruption, and endangering national security. Seems to be a major difference between the parties.

Good question. Let's have a look at partisanship.

In 1998, the Republican Party impeached a Democratic President over oral sex.

In 1987, the Democratic Party declined to impeach a Republican President for shipping a bunch of weapons to Iran and then illegally funneling the proceeds to Nicaraguan rebels in direct violation of American law.

In the 2000s, the Democratic Party declined to impeach a Republican President for launching a war based on bogus 'evidence' - a war that resulted in over 4000 dead Americans and which ran up a tab of over a billion dollars.

Republicans have worked with President Obama on absolutely nothing.

Democrats willingly worked with President Bush on No Child Left Behind, on Medicare Plan D, among other initiatives of that Republican President.

Any more questions?

The party of Richard Nixon and Dick Cheney should never use the word 'criminal'.

Not really. Those are examples of acceptable behavior for a sitting president, she's just ahead of the game. Kinda like doing your Christmas shopping before Thanksgiving.

Or maybe Hallowe'en...

Might want to factor in the matter of Trump having been a member of both parties.

Hillary voted for that war, and never forget it.

This ^^ pretty well describes the difference between Dems and Republicans~~ But went to an entirely a new level when the "FIRST" black president got elected. Then..between Mitch Mcconnell declaring "One term President" prior to being sworn in as President..Basically explains it all! Then of course John B. refusing to even utter the word " Compromise" basically tells and explains the history of unless super majority in Senate and Majority in House..THAT nothing would ever happen. Then came 2010..Demonizing, Birther Conspiracy, GOP took over house with the help of the Tea Party..next came majority in Senate..SO basically Congress was controlled by GOP..What's happened..what did they do?? NADDA shut down government ( costing Taxpayers $$) then poisoned pilled every bill brought forward..

Question is> Just who caused the slow down of progress into increasing GDP?? Sequester got implemented because GOP refused to negotiate..and defunding Military happened ( GOP caused this to be implemented) yet BLAMED OBAMA!!

GOP created what they ended up with TRUMP!! Populous blames ( Federal) Government..and WHO HAS BEEN IN charge of the "Lawmakers??" YEPP!! GOP..

Sorry BUT GOP isn't the answer..It's always been about bipartisanship..work for the PEOPLE and NOT for the $$$ donors!! BUT Politicians are NOT always so pragmatic..Some follow and do what SOME donors want ( Quip Pro Quo) and other really do care..then those that do get threatened with "Primary Challenges" from those BIG $$ Donors!!

Generally speaking Dem's in the past 30 years has tried to do what's best..even if it only partially..NO way can anything be done 100%.. Meanwhile GOP want it ALL or Nothing ..Kind of like G.W.'s statement prior to initiating ME War..You're either with us or against us" ALL or nothing!!

On the Republican side there are essentially two parties at this point, Centrist Republicans and the Far Right malcontents. Seems even more divided that it was after Nixon's disaster.
