She just might be one of the dead by the election in 2020....she would be 80 years old.

The democrats are in a state of Civil War at the moment and good for them. Democrat establishment do not want Keith Ellison to be the chairman for the Party, but instead favor Perez who is establishment back to be the chair of the Party. The Democrats cant take Texas, unless their is major economic catastrophe, or a major incident that causes a president to be unpopular. The democrats can possibly take Georgia, due to hundreds of thousands of Americans who relocate their from northern regions to due to lower cost of living and better quality of life. The Democrats can also take Arizona due to plenty of Californians and northerners who are relocating their for cost of living purposes.

I supported Bernie Sanders, and I was deeply upset for plenty of New Yorkers, and even immigrants alike voted for Hillary. I guess plenty of people in NYC come from places that were socialist or once socialist or remember socialist regimes that are repressive, and thus fear Bernie Sanders. My own Grand Mother said Bernie Sanders would turn America into Guyana, because Guyana at onetime was Socialist/Marxist economy and government. And a woman at work who is Jewish, said Bernie is a Communist, while another told me he is similar to Hitler.

What caused the rise of Trump and Bernie Sanders is the years of broken promises made by politicians in the past 36 years. Jobs leaving the country, wages being suppressed or depressed than what they were two generations prior, cost of education increases, medical costs skyrocketed, and the list goes on. American people are scared and worried. About 120 Million Americans voted in this past election, while the other half and more stayed home. I went out to vote, but I did not vote for Hillary or Trump. I voted for my community first. Also the 2008 recession has yet to heal wounds in this country. To be honest. I think the 2008 recession caused more harm to America and its global resolve, than the 9/11 attacks. Americans are worried and they want something different. This lead many to vote for Trump. I did not vote for Trump, but he is our president, and we are going to have to rally for him because he does not know what the hell he is doing.

As of right now the democrats do not have a platform for 2020 elections. In the mean time, democrats must focus on the 2018 midterm elections which is next years and approaching fast. If the next democrat is establishment, most democrats will sit out and Trump will win. Another big problem is Trump being impeached. If Trump gets impeached, Pence an establishment insider will be President and this will be good news for democrats and republicans alike in the Wall Street/DC Beltway establishment branches. If Pence becomes president. As of right now the democrats have no one, and they will have to wait until the midterm elections to see who is viable candidate for the white house seat. Until than, the democrats needs a new chariman.
The democratic party is split between liberals, progressive and the far left wing of the party. It will take a lot to unite the party by 2020 let alone 2018. As long as the party is run by the like of Nancy Pelosi, Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders and Chuck Schumer they have a long way to go. The party needs to get more young people into a leadership roll.

I voted for Bernie in the primaries, but I was ready to move on once he lost. I wasn't a passionate Hillary supporter but I happily voted for her.

However, the Dems will need a candidate with more enthusiasm behind him or her, and one that will be very solidly ahead of the other candidate. You can even lose the electoral college with a 3 million popular vote lead, so it's important to have as much support as you can get across the board.

I honestly have no idea who are the best choices right now. I know Bernie has a lot of passionate supporters, but he, along with everyone born before 1950 or so, will be too old next time around.

Ideally in my opinion, it should be someone who's not anti-gun, and who can appeal to as many people as possible with their platform. Also, it should be someone on the younger side. And of course, somebody with as little baggage as possible! Only Republicans, more specifically Donald Trump, are allowed to have baggage it seems like.

The anti-gun thing is important because not being pro-gun alone is a deal breaker for many people, but not being anti-gun is not a dealbreaker for most Democratic voters. It might open up a lot of gun owners to vote Democrat, which would be very help.

Also, as far as states go, I think Democrats should have Arizona, Georgia, and Texas in their crosshairs. The former two states, Hillary did not lose by a large margin and I can see the next Democrat possibly winning those states. Texas is a little more of a long shot, but it's not impossible. If the Dems get Texas, the Republicans would have very little chance of winning.
Interesting thread even though you are all over the place. Let me get one thing out of the way real quick, then get to the meat.
In most cases, Republicans will not have "baggage" and still get the party nomination. Trump is the exception to the rule, in that any of his questionalbe issues wer not done in the government, but the private sector.
That is not to say they will not have flaws or attackable positions. It just means that they cannot have the type of past like Obama or Hillary did and get the nomination.

That said, the gun issues was huge this election. You astutely pointed out that other than hard core anti-gun people, a moderate or pro gun candidate will be needed. Reason is, most Democrats do own at least one gun, even of they are not big 2nd amendment proponents.
The Democrats should also look for someone based on their integrity, rather than what their gender is or their race. Many moderates in the (D) party could have beaten Trump, but because Hillary was a woman, many power brokers in the DNC put that above all her obvious weaknesses.
They will also need to moderate their platform, as it seems as if the leftist kooks have taken over the party. That will never play well in middle America.

Whomever the candidate, the D nominee is likely to get more votes than Donald Trump/Mike Pence, but whether they get them in the right portions by state to win is an open question. It will probably depend on how Trump or his successor rates with Independents. The cult will still be there, but that alone won't be enough.

I don't think it matters who they run at this point, the party is in total chaos. I would like to see the rise of a viable 3rd party, and would see them as having a better chance than the Dems who will still be in tears over the election of 2016. Seriously, there appears to be no leadership in the Democratic Party at this point. Maybe by 2020, we'll be saying "Democratic Party?"
