Republicans won't vote for Castro. He represents all that is wrong with Democrat party's race to the left. Republicans in the San Antonio area aren't fans of his, so not sure why you think he'd fare well in a national race.
Yes, he's just another pretty boy minority.
We already did that.

It has nothing to do with his status as a member of any minority group, and everything to with his commitment to a progressive agenda that is completely out of touch with reality.
After thinking about this a bit, I do think, however, that someone from the (mountain) west might not be a bad choice. Western Democrats tend to be much more libertarian in general than their eastern or coastal western counterparts. I think that could translate to broader appeal in the middle of the country.
The problem, even this far out, is name recognition and money.
I am still hoping Dems push for a candidate that has military experience, ability to compromise reach across the aisle, lessen tax burdens & possibly do away with the IRS, improve social services/mental health, legalize marijuana, abolish the death penalty, be tough on big banks, reduce red tape & regulation in the Government, support NASA, be a big supporter of the environment, LGBT supporter, neutrality unless warranted in regards to police/community relations, and support State run single-payer health care.
The closest one to that is the 2nd choice in the poll above.
Terry McCauliffe, Democrat, Kinda Hints That He might run for President 2020
This is the Democrat governor of VA. Short piece on him on Fox News Sunday where he doesn't say he isn't considering it. (best you can get right now)
Also the architect behind Hillary's failed 2008 bid to become President. The VA governorship was his prize for loyalty to Hillary despite that stunning loss.
Now he hits that he might run for Democrat nominee to be President in 2020.
I don't think he would run, or have much of a chance at the nomination if he were to run. I haven't seen much on him as a potential 2020 candidate. At this point, I would say its probably more speculation than anything else based off what else he could possibly run for. He can't run for re-election as Governor, both Senate seats are currently held by Democrats so there isn't really a path for him there, so it is probably more of if he runs again, this would really be his only real option type of speculation. I doubt anything comes from it.
