Both sides hsve gerrymandered, however the NC recent one was more extreme than most. In 08 Obama narrowly won the state, out of the 13 districts 7 were won by Obama and several on each side were fairly close. Under the current lines, the GOP won 10 of the 13 districts based off 08 results and the close districts are pretty much all gone.
You realize that gerrymandering has absolutely no effect on how the state votes for the President or for that matter the US Senate or Governor?
NC is in this situation because the Federal Government forced the state to create two districts that would insure a Black person would win. This was in 1991 after the 1990 census. They achieved that goal, and it has been trouble in the state ever since because the only way it could be accomplished was by drawing out those long gerrymandered districts. This isn't the first time the state has been sued over it.
IMO, I hope they do abolish it. It's not fair to create a district just so a Black person will be elected to congress.
(And BTW, I live in one of the affected areas. At the beginning of the year we were located in District 9, then District 12, now it looks as if we are headed back to District 9 again. All this because Blacks continue to seek special treatment.)

There is complyong with VRA and flat out packing. This was flat out packing, which is why it was tossed.
It should have never happened in the first place as it was forced on NC by the Federal Government. I'm glad they tossed it.

Agreed. That was the excuse. And like all racial quotas it ends up having unintended negative results.
Do you know anything about NC? It's impossible to create 2 all Black districts without gerrymandering and packing.
There are ways to make rwo districts VRA compliant without packing, splitting up communities and even precincts without packing. That is why it was thrown out. The legislature went far above what was required to be VRA compliant in order to creste those districts.
Also, keep in mind is it was not just the Congressional Districts, that was another ruling. It was the state legislative districts in this case.
