If you look in the first column that indicates how the "head of state" is elected you'll see a whole lot of "direct election". Only the USA and Pakistan elect their head of state with "indirect election".

Most of the western world uses the Westminster system. There is no direct popular vote for the Prime Minister.
In addition to my last post, I have to say that you raise a good point. Fareed Zakaria did a segment on the Westminster system, and how it helps avoid political gridlock.
We have a better chance of getting to a national popular vote based on state rights than we have getting to the Westminster system.
I think they don't know what to do at the moment so they are just falling back on assaulting and keeping the people stressed out until they figure it out.
