Maybe there wasn't a public concert back then.

Willie Nelson's publicist made the below statement when discussing Willie's concert for Beto O'Rourke on September 29th in TX.

A press release from Nelson’s publicist describes the event as “the first public concert Nelson has held for a political candidate."

I can't find anything on google showing that Mr. Nelson did anything on behalf of Mr. Hill during the 1978 governor's race. Perhaps it was not widely reported, or he simply showed up at a fundraising stop.

On a related note, President George W. Bush is out fundraising in Texas for various Republican candidates, with the exception of Mr. Cruz.

Perhaps it was for volunteers. After the election AG Hill also treated us to a private performance of the new 'Best Little Whorehouse in Texas'.

DH also remembers a Willie Fund raiser. Could have been for Carter's 2nd term. We were there.

Anybody who is now surprised by Willie's political leanings has not been paying attention.

Key word is public concert. Possibly the one you remember was private. Maybe it required a fee that was paid toward the campaign.

The Willie Nelson concert for Beto is free and open to anyone. First "public concert" is the terminology used by Willie's publicist.

Cruz ran against brother Jeb--Cruz is anathema to the Bush family
And I think the Robert Mercer/Putin/Middle East involvement also makes issues with Cruz because the Bush family are big Saudi backers...and Jeb is married to an Hispanic woman...so maybe that complicates things as well with Cruz trying to hide his Cuban roots...

Toward the bottom of the page, you'll see the PAC contributions. He's a liar.

Out of $23 million raised, only $54,000 is from PACs (one fifth of one percent) and this is all from other candidate's committees. (about $1.000 each from 43 candidates)
