He had always been a law-and-order guy, and in 1993 that led him to endorse a ban on various “assault weapons” along with other state-level gun control measures. And in foreign policy—not a big deal for a governor, but kind of important in a presidential ticket—he showed his stripes in the 2004 election, when Weld was out of office but still came out for George W. Bush. Appearing on the Charlie Rose show 10 months after the invasion of Iraq, Weld acknowledged that he differed from the president on “some of the social issues” but declared that Bush had proven himself in the global sphere: “we face grave responsibilities, and I think he really has grown in office and risen to the international challenge.”
I like Pete Buttigieg better than I like Weld, and I'm far from ready to vote for him. As another poster put it in another thread, I'm "bristling with hatred for the guy". Okay, maybe that's a bit strong, but you get the idea. If I'll consider Mayor Pete but am a dead NO on Weld, that should say a lot.
He's going nowhere and is only doing this for publicity and to try and raise some money.
So he's:
pro abortion
anti gun
pro EPA
pro affirmative action
pro gay marriage
pro marijuana
wants to rejoin the Paris climate accords
endorsed Obama
and you claim he'd be "running on conservative principles?" I can see why you'd like the guy.
Personally I am pro-life, but his view of getting government out of it is libertarian.
Anti-gun? 2nd Amendment right s are individual rights. (May 2016) - Weld
Not sure where you got the EPA comment, but opposing environment protection is really not a conservative thing, but partisan red herring.
No clue where you got the affirmative action part.
Pro pot? I dont think that goes against conservative principles. Same with gay marriage. Evangelical POV, yes.
He endorsed McCain.
Just because GOP establishment supports or opposes certain things, it does not mean those things are conservative. That is where your confusion stems from.
