None of the moderators debate with the candidates.
Don't ever think the questions the moderators ask are off the tops of their heads or that they are on the spur of the moment. The questions have all been carefully selected, discussed, and dissected in some news room with a lot of journalists working on them.
People will watch it. The 'debates' are the only way some folks have to determine who they will vote for. They aren't really debates, but they are the only forums where it's possible to judge our candidates live, under circumstances that are live and full of un-planned pressures on them all.
The unexpected always happens in these debates. That is what some folks will tune in to watch. Some viewers will watch for the amusement, but many will watch in full seriousness.
Either way, the LOLs and the serious viewers are going to be likely to go vote.
The folks who decide to skip the debate and go fishing are the ones who are less likely to turn out.
