So far, the reviews on McCain's appearance have been pretty good. Washington Post style columnist Tom Shales wrote "McCain won't be joining the cast, of course, having other preoccupations, but he did a first-class job in two appearances on the season finale."
Politico's Jonathan Martin opined that, in joking about his age, McCain, 71, actually came across as more youthful:
"Appearing last night on 'SNL' — a venue that doesn't scream old fogey — he used the start and finish of his bit to make fun of, in his words, his 'oldness.'
And it doesn't hurt that in between he joked about a pop culture reference that few in his generation would get. Hard to imagine even the Gipper riffing on 'gaydar.'"
I actually always thought John McCain had a good sense of humor. One thing he said earlier in the campaign that made me laugh was when he called himself a "liberal conservative."
Oh yes, he was so funny, so charismatic, so young....not.
