Democrats and Our Enemies - WSJ.com

Quote:
A great Democratic secretary of state, Dean Acheson, once warned "no people in history have ever survived, who thought they could protect their freedom by making themselves inoffensive to their enemies." This is a lesson that today's Democratic Party leaders need to relearn.
And isn't this EXACTLY how Obama would conduct our foreign policy? Suck up to everybody.

Quote:
And this was the Democratic Party of John F. Kennedy, who promised in his inaugural address that the United States would "pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe, to assure the survival and the success of freedom."
Did the dems actually believe this?

Great article, Joe. I'm thinking he might be at the top of the list for McCain.

They now represent the ;ask what your country can do for you;not what you can do for the country.

Thanks for posting the article, one of the things I enjoy about being a mod on the P&OC forum is our members frequently bring up interesting articles for discussion.

Though I am certain I am in the distinct minority here I agree with Lieberman's sentiments about the direction of the Democratic Party. However, whether this is a move away from or towards the center depends upon the national mood, so he may not be accurately viewing overall public sentiment in today's environment.

I have always liked Joe Leiberman, he is a class act. It is too bad we don't have more politicians like him on both sides of the aisle.

Exactly how much foreign policy have the Democrats been conducting in recent years?

How well has the Bush foreign policy been working out?

Actually, quite well. Although getting rid of a brutal dictator and having actually democratic elections in Iraq wasn't as easy as pouring a bowl of cereal, it is happening. Our foreign policy is no where near the mess of 8 years ago when our embassies, ships and buildings were regularly getting bombed and we'd turned away from rogue dictators developing WMDs.

Actually they have conducted a very aggressive foreign policy throughout much of Bush's presidency. They have done everything they could to convey to our enemies that Americans are divided in fighting islamic jihadism and that if they just hang on until Bush is gone the Dems will give the decapitators everything they could not win on the battlefield. There used to be a perfectly good word to describe what the Dems have done: treason. As a Viet Nam war veteran I've seen this treachery before.

The idea that you can vote to send troops into harm's way and then decide the mission was a mistake is abominable. Once troops are committed there is only one strategic option: victory. Dems have never understood this (probably because so few have served in the military and many, if not most, have the same antipathy for the military that Bill Clinton once admitted to). In Viet Nam Nixon and Kissinger pursued a policy of peace with honor as they sought to diminish the role of the U.S. military in the fighting and negotiated a ceasefile with the North. By contrast the Dems' current policy appears to be defeat with honor. Good luck with that.

Well Senator Lieberman, you are entitled to your opinion. But seeing as you flip-flop on issues like a fish out of water, I think you've finally found a party that suits you. Congratulations!
