The Ross Perot strategy continues to be effective.

Not exactly a “Republican” strategy… it’s an incumbent/establishment strategy in general. Democrats used it as well as the article noted.

A separate group is necessary to define itself apart from traditional GOP insiders & RINOs.

Election 2022, Ohio Republicans Execute Perfect Splitter Strategy to Protect RINO Incumbent Mike DeWine

DeWine has less than 50% support amid the republican voters in Ohio. However, challengers Jim Renacci and Joe Blystone are splitting the anti-DeWine vote, creating a scenario where DeWine is likely to win the primary with less than majority republican support.

...
The Ohio GOPe are always going to be in control of the outcome by organizing and maintaining the republican primary rules. It’s very likely when the final count takes place tomorrow, the combined Renacci/Blystone vote will exceed the votes of DeWine. However, DeWine will advance to the November election because the non-DeWine vote was split. That’s the splitter strategy in action.

Unfortunately, we can expect this exact same design to play out in other primary races this spring/summer. Both clubs use it to control the outcome of their primary elections. If there is a direct head-to-head primary challenge, the club will often recruit another candidate to play the role of the vote splitter.

...
In the 2020 Democrat primary, Elizabeth Warren was told to stay in the race after Super Tuesday in order to keep splitting the primary votes which protected Joe Biden (club selection) from Bernie Sanders (popular base support). If Warren had dropped out with the other primary candidates Bernie Sanders would have benefitted; so the club told her to stay in until Bernie was fully defeated by Biden.

Both clubs use this vote splitting scheme to retain control.

The best way to stop this is for the candidates that know they have no shot to run, should drop out asap.

In this case, if the GOP had nominated Renacci, he would have had no chance in the general election as he us not well liked by Independents...the GOP knew they'd lose the governor race for sure....now they will most likely keep it as Dewine has a lot of support from Independents.

This is going to play out across the nation as Trump backed "election conspiracy" candidates who are more then often unpopular end up winning the primary. Later in the general elections the conspiracy candidates will cause fear draw out more voters against them while GOP voters will stay home not bother voting. If Trump splits off with a "Patriot" party then the split vote will be official. Trump is the worst thing ever happened to the GOP, and the best thing that ever happend for democrat party.

Mike DeWine's positions, per the Wikipedia article about him:
  • Pro-Life/Antiabortion
  • Opposes same-sex marriage
  • Against legalization of marijuana in the state of Ohio
  • Signed a bill that would forbid Ohio colleges and universities from blocking controversial speakers from their campuses.
  • Received an F from the NRA for his position on gun control
  • Didn't sign a bill sent to him from the Ohio state legislature that would have banned transgender students from playing on sports teams that don't align with their sex at birth

I guess those last two make him a liberal.

Wish Renacci would quit running, the guy has no chance of winning a general election. After doing research before voting, Blystone appeared a decent candidate. I ended up being one of the small minority that voted for Hood. He was only one of three Republicans in the state house that voted against SB 193 back in 2013, a bill that heavily restricts third parties from the ballot. Something I'm very much against, people should have a choice of voting for minor parties.
