John McCain on Education

Merit pay & competency testing for teachers
Also promoted merit-based pay for teachers, calling higher teacher salaries an “urgent necessity.” But he added that teachers should be tested for competence periodically and fired if they don’t meet

Use sugar, oil, and ethanol subsidies to finance vouchers
Q: How much power should the federal government have over state education? A: Choice & competition are the key to the future of education in America. Students in America rank at the bottom in the most disciplines such as physics & chemistry. We should try charter schools all over America. I would take the gas and oil, ethanol and sugar subsidies and take that money and put it into a test voucher program

Read for yourself and pick your favorites. Should make for great debates on the topic

As usual, the GOP villifies teachers.

I remember Bob Dole at the 96 Republican Convention. He got a rousing standing ovation when he said that as president, he'd fight tooth and nail against the NEA, which is a labor union for teachers.

I was appauled by the sight of those people clapping vociferously against teachers-for heavenssake.

Now, McCain wants to put teachers on probation.*rolls eyes*

The GOP is against teachers making any kind of decent pay, have been for as long as I can remember. This, despite the fact that they have one of the most important jobs...educating our children.

The NEA has one mission which is to protect teachers in the face of all circumstances to the point it takes a criminal act to even get a teacher fired.

The NEA is one of the big reasons our education system is in the state it is.

The feds should stay out of schools, that is a state responsibility. The onyl thing I see the feds doing, which they are not doing, is ensuring and enforcing a basic academic standard that is accepted across the US for colleges.

Vouchers should be used, if a taxpayer does not want their kid to go to a public school, then they should have the right to have their tax dollars diverted back to themselves so they can send their kid to a private school or home school them.

Actually, this is a liberal idea. Oregon is one of the top 3 most liberal states and they have led the charge on merit pay for teachers.

Me, I disagree with it. Teachers usually have to play the hand they're dealt. My wife had a class of 40 kids. Twenty of them didn't speak english very well (russian, spanish, and a few others), and others came from highly disfunctional families. What can possibly be done about that?

However, I do agree with competentcy testing every now and then. Many teachers go on auto pilot after a few years and just glide towards retirement.

Romney is a major advocate of merit pay and was very big on it while governor. Needless to say he faced major teacher opposition as a result of. If he gets the VP slot then the Republicans will be into merit pay big time. Romney also wants to reform state pensions and make them defined contributions. He and McCain would represent a major shift in teacher compensation. As has been noted by Tea Time in the Obama thread none of them are doing their research since she states it doesn't work and Obama didn't do his research. Scary I guess than none of our candidates do research, isn't it?
