Sen. McCain offers $300 million prize for new auto battery - Boston.com (http://www.boston.com/news/nation/articles/2008/06/23/mccain_offers_300_million_for_new_auto_battery/ - broken link)
Another gimmick.
As of this morning, the national debt stands at 9,370,288,314,000.78. Where does McCain propose we get this additional money? What if Toyota develops the battery. Would his proposal pay a foreign company this prize? You can nearly bet that they are already working on such a product. John, stop with the silly "plans". Get government out of the way and let the market decide. Stick with your proposal to end the tariffs on imported biofuels and stop wasting our time with this crap.
Doesn't sound like a bad idea to me. I would assume that part of the requirements for the reward would be that the technology would have to be shared. If a foreign company came up with it, you pay them, but that technology would have to be shared with all car companies.
How about the prize of a free market... provide a better solution and allow the market to determine your reward?
I've got no problems with private organizations providing prize money for innovation, but the taxpayers shouldn't be roped into further debt to fund pie in the sky ideas.
In this instance, say there's a better battery... how do you charge it? With coal power? Sounds like a great idea to me...
This is very common in medical research. There is nothing bad about this incentive based energy policy. Obama's "plans" will even cost the country more, and the sad part is that, they are bad policies which will further destabilize the country.

Of course not. You power it with promises and printed cash.

A great idea actually. It's not uncommon for the government to do this sort of thing to help move along innovation. With such a plan the government is not "in the way" of anything. No one is being forced to enter the competition. If companies want to they can, if they don't then that's fine too - they can do their own thing. It's merely an incentive to help promote innovation. Nothing wrong with that and in the grand scheme of things the money would be well spent.
Regarding Toyota possibly winning the prize - so what? What's more American - a Toyota produced in Kentucky or a Ford produced in Mexico?

Ken
NO KIDDING!! A lot of "Japanese" automakers are more American than the "American" automakers these days!
If the battery would need to be shared with all auto manufacturers, why would anyone even submit for the prize? That kind of technology would be worth more than 300 million. Now, if it was awarded simply for someone to develop a proprietary battery, that may be more effective.
The reward already exists in the consumers demand for fuel efficiency, and the environmentalists tax on carbon. Why waste our money? It would be better spent as a research grant to Universities.
STOP THE PRESSES... If Obama or Gore was proposing this, the environmentalists would be all up yelling and screaming, posting huge banners from the top of buildings.. But now that a Republican, its a bad, bad idea.. Um.. ok..
p.s. Yes, I disagree with it, but find the contradiction by those posting here histerical.
