It's obvious to anyone who follows politics closely in this country that conservatives are deeply divided this election season. Many of the true minded and independent conservatives like me will not and can not support Republican John McCain for president. It's not going to happen. While McCain has been appealing to conservatives he's largely been unsuccessful. He knows this and this is why he's trying to sway Hillbully supporters and independents. Meanwhile conservatives are left with the option of voting third party or not voting at all. What was once the conservatives' home, the GOP, is no more.
Now without trying to get anyone upset because that's not my intention here, if/when McCain loses in November, who will pick up the mantle for the conservative movement? I'm not talking about the GOP party necessarily. We know about Ron Paul's efforts to do something like this through his liberty campaign, but that's more of a movement as opposed to a person leading the way. Is it up to Paul or others to do it? Again let's keep this discussion civil and accept other people's point of view

Bar none. It's Bob Barr for president 08

Newt will be President in 2012. He waited this one out because he knew it would be a disaster with Obama causing the entire country to divide and seperate.

Depends how you define conservative. If you mean the philosophy as espoused by Paul and his supporters, I don't think you will find this gets to be part of the mainstream discussion.

If you mean who will be the leader of the Republican party it depends upon how they structure their overall philosophy. From the individual perspective it appears that Bobby Jindal, Charlie Crist, Matt Blunt, Mitch Daniels and Rick Perry could be among the major names discussed for 2012.

Jindal and Mark Sanford are my current favorites. If you've got to support these creeps, at least support those that have some fiscal responsibility.

I would LOVE Newt to run, although that might not sit well with some evangelicals because of his cheating past. However, Newt, if elected in 2012, could lead this country to a decade of prosperity like he did in the '90s and Reagan did in the '80s. Obama (or McCain) WILL be a one term President - mark my words.

Newt failed once, he is an also-ran who will never be a serious presidential candidate.

Crist, Frist, and (if he can define himself in the next 4 years) Rick Perry will be the frontrunners in 2012. However, I am not in the camp that believes that Obama's first term will be like Carter's... in all likelihood, he will be the incumbent frontrunner. But if he is vulnerable, I'd say Perry is the most likely to win. He will be untainted from the McCain run, and a favorite of every wing of the GOP.

Isn't that an oxymoron?

I assume you mean in the republican party.
I am not a conservative so what I say does not really matter.
I like Newt but it seems like its time for a new generation to take over. George Bush has failed, people are tired of all the lies and deceit the same way they got tired of Clinton.
Jindal and Crist seem to be rising stars. Crist just needs to stay away from the McCain vp.

I think the real question is will the conservatives stay with the republican party, or will the republican party stay with the conservatives.

The next Conservative will be out of the Ron Paul Camp. Someone who believes in sound money and personal liberty. While the push from the current republican est will be to push more socialism most of America will look else where. Americans are tired of the corporate welfare and bubble bail outs. The issue will be if the Ron Paul canidates can win some elections and we can take over the Republican party from within. Those who believe in conservative and liberty must be ruthless and take over the party, local and state and change the message from within. The media, and corporate elites will never let that type of message we spread so we must revolt and take over the republicans.
