I watched the entire speech yesterday. In it, he displays exactly the America we all need. A pragmatic, compassionate and humble leader of the world, which calls on all the world's citizens to work together to solve our problems.

I like how he mentioned climate change, which is the most important issue facing us all.

I agree with the message, especially about the need for Europe to do more in Afghanistan. I would love to see the EU contribute a division or even a corps sized multinational force but I doubt that will ever happen.

Lets face it, in terms of combat troops only most European armies are not that much smaller.

The German Army for example numbers about 140,000 plus a 62,700 member Air Force and a 19,000 member Navy ... that is a pretty big military by modern standards even more so by European standards.

France has a 150,000 member Army, a 75,000 member Navy, a 65,000 member Air Force and a 102,000 member paramilitary national police force (Gendarmerie Nationale).

Both France and Germany could easily send a divisional sized force to Afghanistan.

JFK'S Speech---
There are some who say that communism is the wave of the future. Let them come to Berlin. And there are some who say, in Europe and elsewhere, we can work with the Communists. Let them come to Berlin. And there are even a few who say that it is true that communism is an evil system, but it permits us to make economic progress. Lass' sie nach Berlin kommen. Let them come to Berlin. We can look forward to that day when this city will be joined as one and this country and this great Continent of Europe in a peaceful and hopeful globe. When that day finally comes, as it will, the people of West Berlin can take sober satisfaction in the fact that they were in the front lines

REAGAN'S Speech---
After these four decades, then, there stands before the entire world one great and inescapable conclusion: Freedom leads to prosperity. Freedom replaces the ancient hatreds among the nations with comity and peace. Freedom is the victor. But we must remember a crucial fact: East and West do not mistrust each other because we are armed; we are armed because we mistrust each other. And our differences are not about weapons but about liberty.
The totalitarian world produces backwardness because it does such violence to the spirit, thwarting the human impulse to create, to enjoy, to worship. The totalitarian world finds even symbols of love and of worship an affront.

OBAMA'S Speech---
True partnership requires true progress with constant work and sustained sacrifice. Now is the time to join together through constant cooperation and strong institutions and shared sacrifice and a global commitment to progress to meet the challenges of the 21st century.
This is the moment when we must build on wealth that opens markets have created and share its benefits more equitably.

In essence JFK is fighting against communalism and telling all who support it that it does not work and here is the proof. He is saying freedom and democracy will prevail and communism will not be able to stop it.

Reagan agreed with JFK that communism must end. He stood up to evil and said no more will we allow it "Mr. Gorbachev tear down this wall". He spread the word of what our country was founded on freedom of men to pursue life, liberty and happiness. He offered support in Berlin finding freedom. He was able to accomplish what JFK had started in 1963.

Obama's speech implies that Americans must sacrifice have sustained sacrifice and share our benefits more equally. That goes against everything this country was founded on. It goes against everything JFK and Reagan fought for and spoke out for. In Reagan's words:
"The totalitarian world produces backwardness because it does such violence to the spirit, thwarting the human impulse to create, to enjoy, to worship." Why does Obama want to take us back to a way of life that has been shown not to work since the pilgrims first came to this country. They tried socialism and most of them died as it breeds laziness and they didn't have enough food to get through the winter. When the new Pilgrims arrived they chose different system capitalism and they thrived. Obama's numbers in the polls tell me everything I need to know about this great country. Many Americans still have the hope and optimism of Reagan and they are not willing to let socialism ruin everything America has achieved in her 230+ years. Vote against socialism this year vote against Obama.

I think he focused too much on the military and terrorism. Most of Europe view him for his (supposed, if you want) message of hope and focus on the future. They don't want him to talk about wars and AIDS but on strengthening the world econony and closer American-German/European ties. The Berlin Airlift and "look at Berlin" motifs went over well (who doesn't like flattery?), but then he started talking about Somalia and Darfur? Bleh. And then in a moment of hope when he starts talking about stronger American-European ties, he moves into terrorism . Not a very positive subject. Nuclear disarmament and Iraq aren't what they want to hear about, I don't think.

I give it a C+.
Fortunately for Obama, posters here only have a vote of one and polls speak with greater volume.

One world? Obama's on a different planet - Los Angeles Times

I found it amusing as obama lectured the germans...on german history. On his take of what it took to "tear down those walls". Again, his liberal ideology missed the mark and tried to rewrite history.

Here's a good analysis by Bolton;

the speech wasn't about specific details but a broader message that some Americans & Obama want to rebuild relationships with European allies after Dubya and the hard right wing managed to screw up with their idiotic war in Iraq. I always find it amazing when I hear dumb ass Americans say screw Europe we don't need them , we are the greatest country in the world rhetoric.
