the de-regulation of mortgage lenders wasn't the problem. the problem was the banks taking on excessive risk to maximise profits. they took on this risk because they knew that bush and his socialist merrymen, hank paulson and ben bernanke, would bail them out when tshtf. i'm not a high powered banker but when i saw the banks handing out huge mortgages to every deadbeat and their mother i knew we were heading in the wrong direction. i can guarantee you that if the banks knew they'd pay the consequences for their irresponsible lending we wouldn't be in this mess.

another thing is that the fed knew how 99.99999% of banks were severely overleveraged. they didn't just find out last year, they had known for years. so what did they do about it? they just went ahead and loaned out more.

now i'm not a big fan of tax and spend democrats, but i am vehemently opposed to BORROW and spend neocons!

bigjohn, do you honestly not see the debt as a problem? this isn't about me trying to prove you right or wrong this about all of us sitting down and having a long hard think about what we are leaving for our children. now i have made an about turn on obama and decided to go with barr. i did so because the more votes that go the way of the independents, the more the top quality candidates will be encouraged to run in 2012. our problem is debt and until i hear either a dem or rep put down a concrete plan to address this problem i'll give my vote to someone else.

I'm a Ron Paul fan, but will not be voting for Obama or Mccain, but will be writing in Ron's name on the ballot, who cares if you folks say "that's not going to do anything for Ron Paul". Sure it does, because that mean I will not be wasting my vote on these two current leading candidates that think they can solve Americas problems by spending wasteful money over seas, pretend to cut taxes, add more government agencies. staying in Iraq, staying in Afghanistan. spend more money. hmmm, these Republicans and Democrats are basically Republicrats Same CRAP different PILE...

58Robbo, your post is interesting. I can certainly understand your frustration with the system and the decline of our democracy and way of life. I have come to the conclusion the 2 main candidate are basically the same. One is a socialist and the other belongs to te party making socialism a reality.
Ron Paul actually said similar in his interview with Nader and Wolf Blitzer. His bottom line was to vote for a third party candidate. This seems to be the time to do just that. We need a grass roots campaign to move us away from the parties that are dismantling the American system.
You have the Patriot act, the single most distructive act towards the constitution. Now we have a bailout which means the tax payers give poor managers our money so they can profit and we lose. ( I say fire the execs and make the bailout an equity arrangement where the tax payers get a benefit) I think you will find one candidate is prepared to combat these and all the oter issues... that being Nader. I suggest checking out his sight. with the media blackoput on him it is hard to see his coverage except on Youtube. check out Ron Paul on cnn... it was interesting.

Let's gang together and reclaim our system with a third party candidate.
