"Opening up the health insurance market to more vigorous nationwide competition, as we have done over the last decade in banking, would provide more choices of innovative products less burdened by the worst excesses of state-based regulation."

God I hope he didn't really say that!

What do you expect? Can you imagine Social Security privatized and dumped into today's financial markets? What would that be - a double - mega bailout? The Republican liberal socialist agenda is working marvelously. They may as well swing that wrecking ball the other way...next up, health care.

He did really say it. He wrote an article for the current issue of Contingencies magazine. Click on the link there for the article, Better Care at Lower Cost for Every American. It's a pdf download. On Page 3, you can read for yourself, McCain says:

Consumer-friendly insurance policies will be more available and affordable when there is greater competition among insurers on a level playing field. You should be able to buy your insurance from any willing provider—the state bureaucracies are no better than national ones. Nationwide insurance markets that ensure broad and vigorous competition will wring out excess costs, overhead, and bloated executive compensation.
