He would not? No, he could not. Contractually, the Commission on Presidential Debates has the say on how, what, when and how many debates can be conducted. If they did not, then Saddleback Forum would proably have been an actual debate.

The poster was referring to the town hall invitation. Obama could do those. He chose to play games then too.

I don't think that would have been legal contractually either, I could be wrong, but if they were allowed to give rebuttals to each a moderator, even if the questions were in a town hall format, than that presidential commission of debates could and rightfully, only due to a contract with the DNC and RNC, cry foul.
I don't have an issue with more than 3 debates or town halls, but there is a reason why it is this way.

On the hill the parties are saying this thing is dead in the water right now. There are not enough votes.

Reid wanted McCain to declare he would vote for it before he committed the dems to a vote.

He's looking for leadership...from McCain.
We haven't heard hide nor hair of Sen. McCain in these negotiations," said Schumer, chairman of the Senate Banking Committee. "He has not been involved except for an occasional, unhelpful statement, sort of thrown from far away, and the last thing we need in these delicate negotiations is an injection of presidential politics."

If McCain doesn't want to show up let the other candidates come. Nader and Barr then it would be far more interesting.

Same as Obama on the surge: It's more important to him to win than to put America first.
One would imagine that someone who wishes to be President would display the calm purposeful manner exhibited by past leaders in time of crisis. Since 700Billion won't solve our problem anyway, what good is erratic behavior?

The Nation and World take it's cue from the President of the United States. We measure the words of it's President as well as his actions during times of great stress. Does the Senator honestly look composed? Just the fact that this is so widely discussed as a political ploy instigated on his part tends to signify an undercurrent of mistrust for his intentions. The fact that he attempted to go it alone and preempt Senator Obama after discussion of a joint public statement lends credibility to these sentiments. Perhaps we need a yardstick - Would we expect a General to act as the Senator has in front of his troops? Were we comfortable with officials who displayed similar behavior during Katrina?

An Official who talks to the people and explains the situation, how we got there, what is being done, and gives them some level of expectation of what we can hope to achieve is on the right track.

YouTube - Harry Reid: McCain Needs To Tell Us What To Do On Bailout

Quote:
“We need, now, the Republicans to start producing some votes for us. We need the Republican nominee for president to let us know where he stands and what we should do.
Along with the gem from obama "call me if you need me", this pearl will come in handy as well.

Face it; the dems were waiting to see what McCain would do. The deal was dead without him on board, that is what they said.
