Americans who watched the first presidential debate on Sept. 26 gave Barack Obama the edge over John McCain as having done the better job in the debate, by a 46% to 34% margin. These results are based on a special USA Today/Gallup Poll conducted on Saturday, Sept. 27, the first day after the debate.
The big question is will Obama end up with a boost that gives him a double digit lead. Can he actually get over 51 percent? Can any candidate get over 51% in Gallup or any daily poll? It is clear that neither candidate has sold a majority of the electorate at this time. If Obama can get over 51 percent for a week then perhaps there are indications that he can. Until one does this election will be decided on the most recent events.
