It's the idea that the government (who is us) cares about ALL people, and tries to make sure everyone has a good life in America.
I don't see it as socialist. It's not like we're making the people "own the means of production".
To me, it's sort of like Reagan's "trickle-down theory", where the businesses thrive, create jobs, and everyone shares in the prosperity (which does not happen right now, because the jobs are shipped to other countries or else the pay level for workers is low). In theory, this would be a great thing.
You must be like 20? I got trickled down on in the 80's by Reaganomics, I didn't like it then and I don't feel like getting pissed on again.
A general redistribution of wealth, not exactly the American dream I envisioned.
VS. the current administrations goal of "promoting the general welfare of the 1% he cares about", as Bush so fondly refers to them "the haves and haves more" and let the other 99% see if they can scrape something out of the scraps that are left over.
The redistribution has been occurring, but only to a very selective group of recipients.
Promoting the general Welfare can be done in many ways. What stands out in the "Preamble", to me is, "secure the Blessings of Liberty, to ourselves, and our Posterity". I don't see much "Liberty" in Socialism for us, or our Posterity
Believe in social programs, they will set you free.
Who doesn't believe in Social Security, Medicare, Unemployment compensation, Free public schools? These are by all definition, social programs. Which ones should we give up?
you forgot to bold this part as well "secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves". Liberty and socialism don't mix. Wealth redistribution removes liberty to implement it. Plain and simple, taking away from one person so you can hand it to another is a violation of liberty, a violation of rights, a violation of freedoms and choice.
I think "taking away from one person so you can hand it to another" is already part of the IRS tax code. I know I read it somewhere... maybe not in those exact words, hmmmmm
The rich pay the most taxes in this country. I believe it's around 40%. They also own 90% of the wealth. Nevertheless, 40% of them paid absolutely no tax whatsoever last year. Raising the tax on the rich, or the well-off (those earning more than $250,000/annum) is simply taking them back to the tax code that was in effect before the neo-cons took over the government. Further, less than 2% of companies in this country classify as "small business."
If there's any "theft" going on, it's not on the part of the Democrats or the American people. For you to claim that the hard-working American people are thieves because they are sick and tired of the continuing decline of the quality of their lives, while watching the wealthy continue to reap the financial benefits given to them by a government of economic elites, you're living in la-la land. THIS is nothing less than corporate "socialism." All of your silly, fear-based rhetoric (blackmail, theft, etc.) is nothing but a smokescreen for your elitism and your protectionist stance in defense the socialist benefits accorded to the wealthy.
Warren Buffett and the Nobel Peace Prize-winning Paul Krugman, as well as any other prominent economist today, believes that the corporate socialism practiced by the neo-cons has contributed to the fall of our economy. Even Buffett said that Obama's tax plan is too lenient--too "conservative," in fact--on the upper class, and that they should be taxed even higher. One can hardly accuse Buffett of being a "socialist." Your blind devotion and loyalty to the "rights" of the rich to run roughshod over the majority of the American people, stripping them of their retirement plans, access to health care, a decent public education; trying to defraud them of their money through "privatization" schemes (such as McCain's push to privatize Social Security), which--in effect--takes money from the middle class and puts it in the coffers of the rich, etc.--all bespeak an equally blind devotion and loyalty to the "theft" of America by the rich.
It may not be patriotic to pay more taxes, but it is patriotic to pay your taxes. How about that "Joe the Plumber"

A government big enough to give you everything you want is a government big enough to take from you everything you have.
I now own my own home, put my kids through college, own my cars and have no bills. I made my own money in the 90's. I did it without the governments help or yours.
