In this economy, racism is officially a luxury. How is John McCain going to win if he can't win those voters? John Murtha's "racist" western Pennsylvania district, where this story takes place, is some of the roughest turf in the nation. But Barack Obama is on the ground and making inroads due to unusually strong organizing leadership.

I had a similar experience the other day. I was talking to the lady that cuts my hair and she was saying that Obama was a Muslim and knew one of the 9/11 hijackers. But she said she still might vote for him!

But you know these counties in West Virginia are the poorest white counties in the Nation.

It's been like this for a 75 years. The Gvt tried to change things around, private charities...Nothing works...They're backwards.

Backwards how? Not enough pole dancers?
WV coal doesn't bother people when it's generating their electricity at an economical rate. The backward thing I see is in your statement.

Kinda like the hood, nothing changes except they kill each other at incredible rates? Nothing works, they're stupid.

64 in an entire state of 1.8 million and yes, they all own guns. Who's backwards, Yo?

Mining is a seductive thing. I think what happens is that the fathers die young, forcing the young men to go to work young, the families start young and there is not alot of education and broadening happening in the region. No one is saying that the people are bad, just that the area has been under a different growth than its surrounding areas. If every job in an area is precious, there is more of a tendency to dislike anyone who might come in and take the job.
