My kids learned about homosexuals early...and against my desire to talk to them about it quite yet. The first incident was when I sent them to Sunday School. The preacher went on a hate rant against gays in front of all the children. My daughter came home sobbing and afraid, and did not understand why hatred was being spewed in a church. Just beautiful...never sent them to Sunday School again after that.
Next was when we lived in Vermont when Civil Unions were signed into law. Right wing religious groups came to Vermont and wreaked havoc on our quiet country life with more hate, rants, protests and terrifying of young children. This time I had to talk to my daughter AND her two younger brothers, one only 4 years old. Thanks so much religious right. You see, I had intended to wait until my kids were around 12 or 13 to talk to them unless they asked first. Instead I had to talk to them at 8, 6 and 4...BECAUSE of religious wingnuts who claim to want to "protect" our children from being exposed to things their parents don't want them exposed to.
