Obama's advantage comes mainly from independents, and from the fact that more voters identify themselves as Democrats these days and almost all of them back their party's nominee.
Eighty-eight percent of Democrats support Obama, and 83 percent of Republicans back McCain. Independents break 44 percent to 35 percent in Obama's favor.
In addition to independents, white Catholics are another important swing voting group and they support Obama 50 percent to 39 percent. White Catholics have voted for the winner in each of the last four presidential elections.
And the RCP average is? No one is gloating we know this is a close race down to the wire and Bots need to remain on top of their game. We need to be reminded of every poll that shows it a close race still and there are a number that show it very close. Keep em coming and Bots keep intense in responding and working hard til the end. Competition is good and we need this race to remain competitive and us to remain vigilant. It is important that we keep needling the other side when we can so they come back at us and that forces both sides to keep working hard in spirited competition. Yes and Sanrene we know you will keep posting and will keep us sharp and competitive and that is for both sides a good thing.

What I find interesting about this poll is that 80% of those polled believe McCain is qualified to be president, with 9% saying no, where as Obama's numbers are 52% think he is qualified, versus 45% who think he is not. You have to go deep into the attached PDF to find that information, but I think that is very telling, nonetheless.

Exactly. Most of the polls show a huge disparity with that issue.
National polls are virtually meaningless right now, except as a way to influence minds into believing the election is a forgone conclusion.

This election reminds me of an American Idol contest. Who ever does best on the stage gets the votes.
