More kids are going to school and have learned how to think.
They are now registering to vote.
The born again aspect of politics has saturated their market -
meaning that they cannot convert any more new people to their cause.
The children of the born again politicos tend to be
more liberal than their parents.
The Republican establishment has voted for the government taking over our banks, so they are no longer against socialism.
Palin was supposed to pull in the base while McC appealed to the undecideds - look how that worked.
Most people in the country, when polled, are socially liberal and fiscally conservative. Our current Republicans are socially conservative and spend money like Reagan and Bush.
Bill Clinton was the opposite of this. He cleaned up the economy and was perhaps a bit too liberal in his socializing.
How can the Republicans put together a winning platform when it appears that the country is going in the other direction?

Step 1: separate themselves from the radical religious whackadoodles who've taken over the party in order to ramp up the "culture war."
Step 2: toss out the neocons who think that the military's mission is to conduct foreign relations.

I think the Republican Party needs to embrace some libertarian ideas and grow with the times..
The former base of the party now appears to be fringe.. If the Repubs stick to what matters and expands upon those ideas they will gain support.
If they dig in to the social and religious aspects of the party then they lose Independents like me.

I think you nailed it right there. When more people start thinking, more people will vote Republican.
The Obama victory among the youth is a symptom of the terrible job our schools have done in the past. Programs like Ted Kennedy's NCLB have certainly shown the Democrat dedication toward providing more useful (read uneducated) Democrat voters.
Fortunately, the MSM has spun the issue so much that it looks like Obama is going to abolish NCLB and our kids will start to think again - and vote Republican.
Yes they should return to the Nelson Rockefeller/William Weld mold.
But remember- nothing lasts forever and the pendulum always swings back (yes, lots of cliches). The Dems may have a good chunk of time in front of them, but eventually the GOP will be back. Its inevitable. And quite frankly, cycles are part of democracy.
In four or eight years (or maybe sooner), Republicans will have cleaned up their act, meanwhile Democrats will have become drunk and corrupt off their newly found power, another "throw the bums out" lanslide will occur and the cycle will start all over again. That's the way it's always been.
After 4 years of Barky, the pendulum will swing back the other way. Always has..always will.
