Senator McCain gave a very respectful and considerate concession speech; during that speech, he said certainly we are disappointed, however, the American people made a choice, and 'we were not their choice'. He stated that he not only had called Obama but made it clear that he would support him, work with him on behalf of our country. During this concession speech, there were some people who yelled, 'boo-ed' and Senator McCain was clearly upset and disappointed to hear that unprofessionalism from his supporters and raised his hands, at least three times, to stop that behavior.

Obama gave a very respectfuly and considerate 'acceptance' speech and in that speech he said that to those did not vote him, that he has gained their respect and support yet, he would work hard to do so. And, he stated that he was going to bring together a bi-partisan group in the White House and work collectively.

For those who are still reeling that McCain did not win and believe deeply in the sanctity of religion, God, to the extent and depth of commonality of Governor Palin and McCain...(I don't mean this as others do not believe in God, etc. or whatever is their Higher Power) ...I think it is very important, then, to remember what Governor Palin said: "It is God's Will" who wins this election, and that being said, and if that is the 'place and sentiment one is at' ...then by Palin's own words...It is God's Will that Obama won and that being the case, it must mean, to me, that this is the way it is, it is time for everyone to step up to the plate, support our President-elect and look forward to a new and bright future with an amazing moment in our history.

If those truly believe, not merely state the depth of their beliefs that 'God's Will" is...than explain to me please how can there be so much angst and frustration over this election....to me, you can't preach it, if you can't practice it.

Excellent, well thought out post, sugarmaple....I don't have an answer to your question....I feel I must say, that I have never really known how much fear, paranoia, and hate, could come from someone who professes to know the love of God I truly hope that everyone can put their prejudices aside, and come together for the GOOD OF OUR COUNTRY...if not, then I think that we are surely doomed...We are all in this together PEOPLE!

Thank you for your comments. I don't understand it either; November 4th truly made history. I was flipping back and forth to different channels that night and thought it would be interesting to get a sense of what other countries were thinking, how they were viewing this election and I flipped on the BBC ... it was amazing and impressive. They were clearly pleased with the results; I am a moderate to minor history-studying-learning kinda person and I think, in general, we, the US, and ironically, based on the evolvement of this country into freedom for oppressed...what do we have engraved on the Statue of Liberty: "Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free......" and despite why were created, we seem to be one of the most racist and bigoted nations...yes, fear, whatever word you want to use...however, I truly believe that we have earned several notches in the world's eyes for this election. I also believed that there were far more "closet-Obama" voters than led on to belive and apparently I was correct.

I don't believe one can have it both ways; sure is great, like having your cake and eat it too...but it does not work that way. One profound picture I saw that night in McCain's camp was two men actually hugging each other and sobbing because Obama won..and they were some scary looking guys...took me all but a moment to realize who they represented and then in Obama's camp, to see people in tears, from college students to Rev Jackson...it was an amazing night and it made an even more amazing statement to the world. I believe we truly made brownie points with the world and Lord knows, we need them.

Perhaps if one wants to use that term "God's Will" that is the reason we have the President Elect that we do......

Good for us for coming together...about d*&* time we honor what we began in 1776.

I am not claiming people should rebel against Obama (that is if he is acting within the design and bounds to which this country stands), but please do not confuse "God's Will" with the requirement of acceptance of the action. As I have said in the past, much evil happens in the world and though the allowance of it is within "God's Will", that will does not mean "acceptance" of that evil is his will.

Now please do not take this as saying Obama is evil, that is nowhere near my point. The point is that even though something may be "God's Will", it does not mean that we should accept or embrace that which happens, only that that it is part of his plan. I hope you understand what I am getting at, let me know if you need me to explain further.

Yes, I was flipping through channels too, and it was AMAZING to see the support from different countries for our election! They know that our country has had so much turmoil at home and abroad, that we deserve a positive change and that is what I believe President Elect Obama will accomplish. But... we must come together and stop all this infighting, or sadly, nothing at all will get better.

So does that mean you are opposed to God's Plan or God's Will...there are lots of bad things that happen to many of us...and there are choices with how we deal with those situations...we can be angry and attack, we can sit back and wallow or we can say, hey there is a reason for this and like it or not, "who am I to question"....and I will learn to accept what is on my path at this time...and learn to control what I can control, learn to accept what I can accept and for the rest...it is out of my hands...call it the laws of nature, call it God's Will or call it the Universe being wiser than us...

Whichever, this is our country's path at this time and we need to join in with solidarity, support, encouragement and hope....and I truly believe we have risen in the eyes of many countries and that is truly important and significant.

So, it is what it is...and arguing about it is fruitless and foolish; we have a new President elect and we need to support that person. This country, as a awhole came out in a strong force, the news stated that an additional 11 million voters came out and that is staggering and impressive although that is certainly how it should always be, voting is important...the people took a stand and the choice was made.

Done! Fini! We have lots of good stuff to look forward to; let's not look back but other than to learn from mistakes and failures...because those mistakes and failures, and prejudices etc., and feelings of superiority by some, is pretty much what got us in this position to start with and those actions and attitudes clearly do not work.

I am opposed to conducting ourselves as though we knew God's Plan or God's Will, when in fact we could not know such plan or will, even if there were one, which has not been demonstrated by the many brilliant minds dedicated to doing so.

Basic human decency is not God's Will, it is people, in their collective wisdom, understanding what is in the collective best interest of everyone. Our perceptions of God's will often conflict with basic human decency, and keeps coming much closer to destoying us.

I fear for my very freedom as do many others. Watch as things unfold. This person as president is a very serious mistake. Seriously, we're headed for civil war or at the very least, division over an election that has not been seen since 1860 when South Carolina seceded. Wait a minute, that lead to civil war...

Just wait till the new congress starts pushing their radical agenda for things to seriously unravel if the economy has not completely collapsed by that point. A big swath of this country, largely rural, has by the electoral system been placed in the minority though the majority won by a slim margin. This country is in fact about equally divided politically with swing voters and the effects of third parties putting in one party or the other. The government does not represent the interests of nearly half this country's population and the people who are about to be dragged through the mud by radicals are in no mood for it. This is precisely what lead to states seceding and shortly thereafter, civil war when a president refused to accept the desires of the people. Watch as congress passes a massive gun ban, or his national police force idea, it will set this country on fire. McCain was by far not a spectacular candidate, but he was moderate despite Palin trying to fire up the far right, and this country would not fall apart under him.

Arctichomesteader. I don't know how old you are, but I think you are overreacting.

I can remember once, on one of the first warm days of spring, I was in the backyard watching my dad do something, when the next door neighbor walked over and said "Prosident Roosevelt is dead". The next day, the man who would drop an atomic bomb on a city full of civilians and then do it again a few days later was inaugurated. The world did not come to an end, though, and I have watched while eleven more new presidents took office, some of them fools. and life went on.

We'll just have to wait and see then won't we. My study of history tells me we're headed for a disaster. Wait and see is all we can do (other than prepare to survive it). Every warning sign points to this being something close to the election of 1860 though the secession reaction may be delayed this go around. The problem is, our enemies in the world are starting to circle like hawks, waiting for their chance.
