Chaves is trying to erase the appalling divide between the hidalgos (landed wealthy) and the campasinos (landless poor) of Venezuela while Obama is trying to save the capitalist gamblers of Wall Street from their own speculative excess. Personally, I support the efforts of Chavez but do not support Obama’s recovery plan.
I wish you were right, but unfortunately that is not the case. We all supported Chavez. After the failed cup d' etat, we really thought that the country was on its way to big changes. Indeed, we got change, but not the one we needed. Poverty, crime, and corruption are rampant in Chavez's administration. So, let's just say that we went from Lucifer's hands to Satan's........oh wait they're both the same.
whats next...millions of Americans are soul brothers/sisters with Chavez because everyday they buy gas at his state owned Citgo gas stations across the US of A
I buy gasoline at my local Citgo station because the price is competitive and I think I am doing my small part to help Venezeula.
Amazonas - entrenched corrupt people and practices are very difficult to remove from a previously entrenched tyranny. Venezeula needs a very dedicated and fearless prosecuter to put and end to the corrupt dealings. I can only hope Chaves will appoint one while cleaning out his courts as well.
"In the latter case I would have let the “market” take its losses and had the government seize the few remaining assets of the banking system and fold all of then into a new Bank of the United States in order to regulate the economy to allow for controlled growth"
Me too, but then it will be another reason for him to be accused off taking over like a socialist.
But what happens when the world is no longer petroleum based? I am sure things will look quite different then. Maybe windmills for miles and miles.
Not sure that will be within our lifetime. But would not mind going back to horse and buggy days! Slower pace of life. Less crime, less noise? Maybe less threat of war and rumor of wars.

Not to mention the programs for fuel assistance CITGO ran. I assume that anyone who took that is a commie. I'm sure the Democrats read postings like these withh a big grin because they know it will keep decent conservatives away from the GOP
I don't get why all the rightys bicker about this guy, Venezuela is in better economic shape than the vast majority of other South American countries. I guess it's better to be dead than red
Chavez is a despot and a communist who sympathizes with the plight of the Castro's of Cuba. Of course Americans with socialistic tendancies tugging at their heart strings (and empty wallets b/c communal living rocks and jobs are overrated when the dumb-ass who lives down the street works his ass off can pay taxes to support your lazy behind ) would sympathize with a dictator.
"Venezuela's economic freedom score is 39.9, making its economy the 174th freest in the 2009 Index. Its score decreased 3.8 points from last year, reflecting significant declines in eight of the 10 economic freedoms. Venezuela is ranked 28th out of 29 countries in the South and Central America/Caribbean region, and its overall score is much lower than the world average.
Venezuela's government is increasingly interventionist and reliant on oil exports. Business freedom is limited by inefficient and rigid regulation. Although foreign and domestic investments are treated equally, investment laws are opaque and burdensome. In 2007, the government expropriated the most lucrative industries. Inflation is more than 15 percent, and there are price controls on almost all goods and services. Corruption pervades civil society and the judiciary; contracts and property rights are not well protected."
