Mel Gibson was born in the United States and moved to Australia when he was 12. So maybe he only spoke "Aussie" in his early film roles.
In earlier Mel Gibson movies, such as Lethal Weapon, you can hear Gibson struggling with an American accent and the "aussie" coming out. American or not, he had a down under accent. I think he got some good voice coaching or the "American" came back.
