Among all of the television programs, movies, comedies and music in contemporary American soceity, it seems that degeneracy and banality has become the norm. Much of television has become filled sexual provactive material, violence (especially brutal violence), re-runs, or simply a scramble of the same shows put on diffferent networks, reality tv and a overall boring and sad state of modern television (be it through cable, internet or mobile device). In the movie or film industry, there is a little variation from television due to some new concepts, however, again, there is still too much violence and sexual imagery, and not enough wholesome material being produced. As for modern American music, the use of "canned" or synthesized instrumental components, in addition to artists with little musical talent, has destroyed the beloved performing artform.

Today the question is asked, why has American music, film and television declined so much, and so fast within the past several years? Is this deterioration a sign of what we have become, and where we are headed as a nation?

When you have people with Ivy League MBAs deciding what your "culture" will be, it's not really a good sign. There is probably some malicious intent, but mostly I think it is penny pinching, maximizing profits and gaining more power for themselves. A remake is much easier to make and sell than an original movie, a remix rap "artist" who uses all sampling and software to create his tracks is easier to discover than the next Beatles, Elvis, Jimi Hendrix or Louis Armstrong, and a reality show full of joe schmoes buying stuff out of a storage locker is easier than making the next Seinfeld or Sopranos. An oversaturation of media channels is also to blame for the dilution of quality. The internet and cable TV need to be filled with "content" to stay in business, as do sewage plants.

Hey, Televison hasn't completely turned to trash. Have you seen Fargo, Game of Thrones, Big Bang Theory, American Horror Story? Those are decent shows!

I do agree on the movie part though. I love horror movies, especially 80s/90s ones: Chucky, Freddy, Michael. The quality of horror movies made today is low. Final Destination series is good, but other movies like the Saw series and Paranormal Activity are ok to watch once but that's it. I can watch those old 80s movies over and over again. The fact that 50 Shades of Grey is being released soon says it all about the movie industry.

Movies are better than they've ever been thanks to technology. While the '90s was the golden age of Sitcoms, there are still some good ones like Big Bang Theory on the air today.

I completely agree with the original poster. I cannot watch television anymore, and dare say have lost friends and a social life by refusing to go to overpriced, dull, repetitive movies filled with nonsense and propaganda.

I cringe at the thought of what has become of the media, entertainment, and hollywood. I am an old fogey already in my 30s, and I cannot wait for the collapse to begin in earnest, so the whole thing can go bankrupt and we can be spared the spectacle of vapid attention-seeking buffoons who are paid to do stupid things in front of the camera.

It hasn't.

You simply confuse your subjective preferences for objective facts.

Every generation teems with people just like you, whining about how 'bad' X, Y & Z are now, compared to the 'good old days'. The generation of your parents did it. The generation of their parents did it. And rest assured, the generation you so despise for their cultural content will do it for the generation they themselves launch into the world.

Your whining is simply the repackaged whining of generation after generation throughout the centuries.

The general agenda of the media elites is to accrue more power and control over the populace and how they think. Much of this is done on a subliminal level, using occult symbolism. The general goal is to weaken people so they have no self-discipline, morals, or values and to impart the values of their very sick occult religion. The media works in tandem with top levels of government & the business world to achieve these ends.

Here are a few of many YouTube videos on the topic..and not necessarily even the best ones....but a good enough intro to a very big topic:

That's very true, a lot of whiny geriatrics think the horrible music, movies and TV from their time was so amazing just because they were young and could do fun things and were happier so they associate it with the good times. Bitter old cranks think all entertainment is evil and bland now. A shame how wisdom completely misses a good portion of the elderly, but they were illogical dimwits in their youth as well.

I do agree that the "anti-hero", such as Bryan Cranston's character in Breaking Bad or Tony Soprano has become somebody to be admired rather than admonished. And I do believe this does indeed have a deleterious impact on society -- when you make it fashionable to behave in a certain manner, the herd follows.

Not what we need right now, is it?
