I recently stumbled on a YouTube video of a TV appearance of a cast performing YCSTB from Hairspray (similar to how a Broadway cast would perform on The Today Show or Good Morning America). Except they were all by played Japanese actors except for Motormouth who I think was black (maybe mixed?). I can't help but wonder how they portrayed the major plot line of racial desegregation if all the performers were the same race? It was easy to figure out who was Penny and who was Seaweed by their costumes and interaction, but they were both Japanese. Very confusing. The comments were turned off on the video (I guess that's not surprising), or I would have asked.
