Pet-friendly rental home? (Eugene, Springfield: real estate, houses, tenants)

Hi Everybody,

I just accepted a job in Springfield, starting July 20th. My family and I are looking for a rental house within a 30 minute commute. We have 2 Golden Retrievers, 3 cats, and 3 Guinea Pigs.

I have done an internet search, daily and weekly newspapers, and talked to a few property management and real estate folks. How do I find pet-friendly single-family homes to rent? We are trying to keep our rent $1200 and under.

I'd be interested to know too. I think a lot of landlords would balk at the idea of me bringing my 8 cats to their place (I'm obsessively clean though!).

Pets are a tough sell for a lot of landlords that rent houses. Many are willing to rent to tenants that have one or two dogs, or one dog and one cat. But I have to think you are going to have a tough time if you fully disclose all of the pets you have. Of course, in this down economy, it is possible that some landlords are desperate to rent their places out. But I think you can still expect to pay a healthy deposit and or pet rent. I am seeing a lot of homes for rent right now. Your best bet would just be to start calling around. Check Craigslist and local property management companies and the local paper classifieds (Eugene Weekly, Register Guard...). Google around.
