Definitely, OP, if you're going to be in the neighborhood, you'd be missing the star attraction if you skipped St. Pete's. You can arrange to take a little cruise from Helsinki, and no visa is necessary, because you stay on board ship instead of in a Hotel. But the visa process isn't that difficult anyway, if you have a travel agent who works with Russia.
Emphasis on this - Estonia is the best location there is to offer in Northern Europe / Nordics AND of the Baltics.
It has a stunning medieval downtown, a flawless summer resort city, an amazing infrastructure that is amazingly technologically perfected (aka wifi is covered in the country and it's free.), the cities culture is an infusion of Denmark and Sweden with its own charm. They have such a sad history and turned into something so great.
I make a big emphasis on visiting the castles of Lithuania, also. The cities and towns in Finland are an amazing stop in the area. Finland has some amazing archipelago that you will adore, as well.
You will love your trip.
Estonia, a place I would have otherwise dismissed, does seem to get a lot of great recomendations.

That's true, but I wouldn't recommend the cruise. 2 nights, with only less than 8 hours in St. Pete. Seems like a waste of time.

Don't do that. Estonia and Tallinn is definitely worth a visit. Everyone speaks English, the country is relatively cheap compared to the Nordics, and has great restaurants. Hotels, compared to Helsinki, can be half the price.
I did that trip for 3.5 weeks last year, but I was driving and camping so it was easier than what you plan.
